Tripod Mirrors to Dumbo Style Mirrors
« on: August 22, 2016, 11:55:26 pm »
Hello All,

I want to replace the tripod style side mirrors on my 1973 Blazer to the dumbo style mirrors. I have tried to research how to do,this, but I have not found anything great.

I have a couple of questions for anyone who has done it so they have seen it,

After removing my tripod mirrors, I now have holes from them that need to be welded shut. Does the top hole from the tripod mirrors align with any of the two top whole that the Dumbo style mirrors will need?

Since my doors did not come with Dumbo doors originally, I know that I will need to purchase the inner brace. I am not sure how the brace attaches inside the door. Does anyone have pictures of this bracket?  Will I need to make a hole for the bolt to go through to hold the brace.

Where does everyone go for parts like this,  .

Thanks!

Welcome. The "dumbo" mirrors you mention are actually called "Below Eye Level" mirrors.

1st, none of the holes for either style mirror line up with each other.

2nd, there should already be an existing mounting hole in the inner door frame for the brace and the brace uses the bottom mounting screw of the below eye level mounting bracket. Also, the brackets are specific to left and right, they do not interchange. They also only install in one direction, trying to put them on in one fashion they won't fit right and trying to install them on the wrong side, the holes won't line up. So just keep them on their respective sides and then you will see they only go on in one direction. You could harvest them from a junkyard. That's where I found mine.

3rd, the below eye level mirror mount center line should be in line with the top mount of the tripod mirror which is also in line with the steel brace that is the run channel of the leading edge of the window.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't think the 1973 trucks ever came with the type of mirror you are referring to as a "Below eye level" mirror. So I wouldn't have thought there would be any type of existing mounting hole. I took a picture of the inside of the door after removing the door panel.  I have attached it. I don't have my 1980 GMC anymore. But I plan on keeping my A1980GMC name!  :) so I can't pull the panel and compare.

sells the mirrors, the brace and the nuts needed to mount the mirror. I am just a little leary of using them. I bought some door window seals from them recently. They said they would fit my 1973 - 1975 Blazers but they are obviously for full doors, when that is not what I have. So I wasn't sure if it would be better to try and find used braces or trust

Thanks again for the reply. I appreciate the help. I am prepping my Blazer for paint so I want to get the mirrors set before it gets painted.

Your welcome. There is no picture attached either. I had a set of mirrors from the distributor you speak of, they were fine, no issues. I'm only using the mounting brackets and lower cover from them now, not the whole mirror assembly.
