Classic deep exhaust sound
« on: August 06, 2016, 10:39:38 am »
On my 1984 Silverado Stepside, I have straight dual 2.25" pipes with stock manifold and mufflers coming from my '87 350 engine. I am going to install a set of headers, but I haven't decided which mufflers to install. I'm looking for the classic deep tone for my truck, but not too loud because live in a suburban area. To start, until I can gather enough money to install dual straight pipes to the rear bumpers; I was planning to install a set of cherry bombs (that I have in my garage) with turn down pipes ending right before the rear tires.

I have a couple of questions for those who already have that deep sound coming from their truck exhaust.

Where is an ideal area after the collector to put the muffler?
What do you recommend mufflers like Super 44s or glass packs like Cherry Bombs?

Thanks!!

Mufflers are a pretty subjective thing.  You need to listen to trucks and decide what you like.

I usually find glasspacks annoying on the highway, and much louder than I want.  Though, a buddy had some on his '77 Pontiac LeMans, and they sounded perfect, including the popcorn backfires on deceleration.

Magnaflows sound really cool to my ear, but I don't know how much they will drone on the highway.  They are a straight-through design, so they should be wicked at full throttle, but they have a large body to absorb sound, so they should be decent around town.

I initially ran Walker SoundFX mufflers (sound clip), which sounded just fine, but were a little restrictive and didn't last long.

Now I have relatively long body Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers, which are maybe a bit too quiet, but still snorty at full throttle.  Not much different than the walkers (sound clip).

Personally, I can't stand the "hollow," "echo chamber" sound of Flowmasters and other chambered mufflers.  But that is just personal preference - you are the one who has to listen to it.  Buy what your ears like.

I love glass packs.  But I'm not 16 any more and I can't live with them every day.....

The truck is my weekend driver and I don't do much highway drivin'. So maybe the cherry bombs and turn down won't be too bad.
The popcorn sound is annoying to me. Thank you for your opinion.

I'm running true duals 2.25 all the way back. I use cherry bomb turbo mufflers. No drone on the high way and sound nice when your on it and I never worried about the neighbours even when I left at 6:30 to for work. I had cherry bombs with turn downs. Found too much bassy drone when at idle in traffic, sounded cool but got annoying after awhile.

To confuse the issue, Borla has some new products:

i'm not a big fan of flowmasters but they get the job done and are durable.

I`m running Flowtech 50052FLT Raptor Turbo Performance Mufflers with Long Tube Headers and Dual Exhaust. Sound pretty good to me for a cheap muffler.

My 86 has long tube headers, 2.25" true duels (cheap flow tech kit I think) and Jegs house brand "deep tone" chambered mufflers. Sounds just right. Still has that 80's truck sound, but no high pitched cackle and definitely deep. It's not too loud and not too quiet...perfect for out in farm country where I live.

Thanks Farmboy21. That is what I was looking for. Someone who actually hooked up an inexpensive exhaust that has the old school sound.

My 79 c15 has a 350/T350 combo with stock manifolds and 2 1/4 true duals with 2" crossover pipe and all the way back to bumper with pencil tips and long glass packs. Actually sounds really good and not obnoxious at all. I have a brand new pair of Flo Pro single chamber 10 mufflers in garage, and just cant talk myself into installing them. Glass packs usually sound like crap on deceleration but due to this being the longer packs, they sound just find in idle and on the highway. As recommended above I go to youtube and try to find an exact combo as mine, and listen to the different exhausts. I have found in my many years, and hundreds of different exhaust set ups, that just about everyone sounded different even when similar to other vehicles. Good luck and keep us posted

As far as placement......take a yellow grease pen and draw a line down the side of your exhaust pipes. Drive your truck around for an hour then check the grease pen line. Where you can still see the grease pen, that is a safe area. Anywhere where the line is melted and gone you want to avoid.

The point of doing this is to determine where the hot exhaust gasses cool down at. Anywhere past the the unmelted line will be the best spot for them.

And for what it's worth check out Hooker Aerochamber mufflers.
