86 k10 with 350 and 700r4 stalls when put in gear
« on: November 03, 2016, 08:38:19 am »
Hey everybody, I'm new to the site. I recently purchased a 1986 k10 with a 350 and a 700r4 tranny. I'm having a problem with it stalling when I put it in gear. Forward and reverse. Seems to be worse in reverse. I've tried adjusting the TV cable with no success. The engine runs and idled great with great throttle response. I can usually get the truck going after it has warmed up a little but it always feels like it's about to stall when I come to a stop while in gear and sometimes does. I've adjusted to idle up to make it drivable but I know something isn't quite right. Just not sure where to look next. I'd like to avoid having to get a whole new trans if possible.   Any help would be great. Thanks!

check for vacuum leaks around the intake and carb or hoses. and dont drive without checking on proper tv cable adjustment if you havnt already or you will burn the trans up

I just put a new edelbrock 1406 carb on it. The factory Qjet was in the bed of the truck when I trailered it home and looked like it had been back there for a while. I'm having the Qjet rebuilt right now. I've replaced all vacuum lines for the carb/vac advance and triple checked that everything was tight. The TV cable was adjusted all the way in (all the way toward the firewall) when I picked it up and made for a hard shift into gear. I adjusted it out about 1/4" and it's a softer shift into gear but feels like it wants to stall more with it like that.   Are there any vacuum lines going to the trans?  I didn't see any but I didn't look real hard. Would it be worth just putting a new torque converter and lock out kit in to rule that out?  I don't mind spending some money on it to make it right.
