tail lights and turn signals 1986 chevy k10
« on: December 14, 2016, 01:28:47 pm »
Hello. So I'm having a strange issue with my daily. I got pulled over last night because my taillights weren't working. So after the cop wrote me a warning (thank God) I got home and started checking things. When the headlights are on I have no taillights or brake lights. And when the turn signals are on and I hit the brakes the signal lights on the dash glow solid instead of blink kind of like when the hazards are on and you hit the brakes. Also it doesn't matter which way the stick for the signals is pointed only the left side blinks. When the headlights are off it works fine. So I tested it with another headlight switch it still does the same thing. I'm leaning towards a bad ground but I think it could be maybe the brake light switch. What's everyone's thoughts? I've googled the issue with no luck.

Bad grounds, check them all, add one to the rear circuit-I find adding one to the rear circuit in any vehicle reduces burn outs and gremlins.

When checking grounds, completely remove, and inspect. Any wires that have green or black corrosion, replace. Chances are the whole wire is bad, you could try clipping the ends to see if more then an inch is green/black, but that may leave it too short.

The wiring diagram shows a ground on the left light should I add one to the right?

Well, you won't believe this unless it's what you find. Check your tail light bulbs and see if one of the filaments hasn't broken and crossed onto the other filament.

Good to hear, yeah if a vehicle has light issues I always check grounds and add one if the vehicle only has one for a pair of lights. 9 Times outta 10 this fixes everything.
