New oul pressure sensor reads high
« on: March 17, 2017, 04:19:21 pm »
Hello everyone. When i bought my 86 c30 454 the gauge read just below 30 at idle and a bit above while cruising. It recently started getting erratic. So i replaced the sensor. Now it reads 50 psi at idle and a bit above while cruising. Is this normal or is something in the circuit not right? Gauge only goes to 60 psi so 10 psi aint much to play with.

Please include Year, Make, Model etc.. when posting
i would start by testing your "new" sensor and see what it shows. since it was erratic it could be the problem but if your sensor isnt in specs then it will be giving a bad reading

Begin by verifying actual engine oil pressure using a manual oil pressure tester.  That way you have a known baseline for accurate diagnosis of the instrumentation.  To test the dash gauge, disconnect the sender wire and ground it - the gauge should read zero with the ignition ON.  Next, insert a 60 ohm resistor between the sender wire and ground - the gauge should read 60 PSI with the ignition ON.  If you cannot find a 60-ohm resistor (it's a non-standard value), substitute a 56 ohm resistor - the gauge should indicate slightly under 60 PSI.
