78 k10 jack
« on: September 14, 2004, 01:57:00 pm »
I've been looking for 3 days now at every Chevy truck (restoration) catalog I can find but in none of them or anywhere online can I find a jack for my truck.  It maybe has a small lift (2")  I can find the jacking instructions sticker (big help that will be when I have a flat)  Anyone know where I might find one besides a junk yard?  I've also seen those Hi-lift jacks like jeep guys have on the front of their rigs.. but where do you use those to lift at?

Thanks

Man, I feel your pain. It seems the resto catalogs all have the same parts! I couldn't find the dust shield for my 3 spd. Saginaw ANYWHERE! Then, the last place I EVER thought of had it: the local Chevy dealership (and it was affordable {$28.90!}). I checked with all my sources (  Truck, Cheyenne Pickup Parts, Golden State Pickup Parts, etc.) and came up with the same thing you did, NOTHING. Well, I can give you the best advice possible, make friends with the parts/service manager at your local dealership (take lots of donuts) and you might get lucky and he/she will order it for you. I'm sure that there's some type of cross-reference they use to help restorers and such. Oh yeah, and don't let the fool you. I was told over and over again that the dealer doesn't carry parts for vehicles that old, but I don't recall 3 speed saginaws being used today, so how'd I get my dust shield? Hope this helps!

From what I've seen the jack was basicly just a bottle jack... can anyone tell me how high the jack would need to go?  I looked at sears and there are 6 ton bottle jacks for under $20.

I went through the same problem with my '74 C20 CrewCab.
I bought a jack off an '85 K10 from Ebay back in May and it didn't fit the inner fender mounting correctly (base plate too large), but it did it's job jacking the truck up.  Since then, I did find the correct jack after finding the OEM part number.  According to my parts manuals, your '78 K10 uses the bottle jack (OEM 14018602) and you will need the handle (OEM 15981733) to operate the jack.  Email me (skd406@prodigy.net) as I may have found these items or talk about the '85 jack I have sitting aroud.

I agree with Mike about checking at the Chevy dealership for alot of OEM parts. We have a 95 GMC 1500 Sierra and a 77 K10 Silverado, and alot of off the wall parts that I thought I could only get in a junkyard or aftermarket catalog I've found at the dealership for a surprisingly affordable price. Any 4-8 ton bottle jack should work for your truck though. Maybe one of those jeep type jacks, but the thing rattling around in the bed or behind the seat in the cab would drive me nuts!:lol
