Rotor Replacement
« on: June 06, 2006, 08:43:00 pm »
I know I am new to owning a 4x4.  This sub is my first one. Anyhoot, I want to replace the front rotors.  I thought it would be a simple thing. It still may be, not sure though.

I bought two new front rotors for this 3/4 ton 2500 series GMC.

Now, I started looking at this baby and do not know where to start.

Do I have to remove the hub?

I know I have to take the caliber off, but did not want to until I figure out the rest of it. I gotta drive this puppy tomorrow.

Any input would be fantastic.

If I remember right the entire hub assembly has to be pulled out, and a special socket has to be used (has slots in it) to get the rotor off..

If you start it NOW you might be able to run it tommorow.
Anyways, you have a ring clip around the spindle that comes off, be careful because the inner spring will come out in a hurry! Then you will need to pull out your 4 pin spanner socket to pull the outer locknut, then carefully pull the spacer out. Get the socket back out again and pull the inner nut, drink a beer, soil a few more rags as to not get the grease in your beer then reverse the process starting with opening another beer. Sounds simple huh???
Hope this works, your pic w/ new stuff on itFree Image Hosting at allyoucanupload.com>

Sounds complicated.  I was afraid of that.  The dang chilton manual said for the V series trucks, i would need a special tool.  Heck, i don't know if it is a R series or V series. Man, that's alot of stuff to do.

Do the lugs need to be pressed in the new rotor?

Thanks for the replies.

Exactly what specialty tools do I need to purchase specifically for this task?  What are they called and can I get them from NAPA or Advance?

Either place should have them.  You will need the  Four Wheel Drive socket(The one with little slots, looks like a great big Impact socket with no sizing.)  You will need something to drink.  You will want some 707L grease(red stuff) to re-pack your hubs and bearings.  Might also want a spindle socket, not sure about that one though, it uses a slide hammer to remove the spindle.

Come on Guys, doesn't somebody live close enough to Sarge for a Wrenchin' Party?:hat

All this talk of something to drink makes me thirsty. Tell ya what, someone bring the wrenches and I'll supply the beer. All you can drink.

An dby the way you will have to press in new studs but you shouldn't have too much of a problem w/ that if you have a good enough thumper, BFH, hammer, whatever you want to call it

Well, i greatly appreciate all of the insightful information.   It doesn't seem tooooo bad.  I think that advance gave me the wrongn rotors though. The new ones just aren't as deep as the ones on her now, maybe 1/2 narrower b/w the brake surface and lug nut stud surface.

Not too sure about pressing the lug nuts back into the new rotor, if I can get the old ones out.

I may be putting this job off a little.  There is just the smallest of vibrations when braking at high speeds.

Thanks again.

Andy
