Starter runs when you put it in gear
« on: April 16, 2006, 02:50:00 am »
Just got an 83 shortwide to replace a 77 stepside that has seen better days. pulled 350, rear end and steering column from 77 to make 83 complete. Got everything hooked up and fired truck tonight starts and runs fine but when you shift out of park the starter runs. I also didnot hook up the neutral safety switch or the reverse lights. but I am at a loss as to the starter running unless it is a short some where, which I am going to look for Tomorrow.

The plug on the top of your column has is the first place I would look. the pin positions changed every few years or so. Go back an look at the 77s plug coming from the truck adn make the 83s match, I bet you will find they are diferent.

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs
