Rear Axle

I have a 1973 C20 with the 14 bolt 10" ring geared rear axle. I was just wondering what the large hubs are for that are mounted on the drums. Are they just there for when the dual-rear wheels are installed (which i dont have)? Or do they actually have something to do with the axle?

It is a full floating axle and the "hub" retains the axle in the housing. The 8 bolts you are looking at in front of you wheel is bolting you axle to your hub.
Also just to let you know, it is a 10.5" ring gear.
