Front wheel play
« on: June 10, 2007, 11:06:47 am »
Should there be more play on the front wheels of a 4x4 versus a non 4x4?

On my 91 3/4 ton 4x4 suburban I had to plug a slow leak on the front left tire yesterday.  After tightening the lugs nuts back on and before lowering her back to the ground, I noticed an awful lot of play....by grabbing the tire at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock position and moving in and out.  There is about 1/4 " play.  I placed my hands on the 12 'o'clock and 6 o'clock positions and moved the tire in and out again, and same results.

The ball joints were replaced on both fronts last year.  It moves without the steering linkage moving...so there is some play.

Is this normal??

Have you repacked/checked the wheel bearings lately? Since you just did ball joints, I would start with the bearings.
