Glove Box Lock Removal?
« on: September 16, 2007, 09:10:58 pm »
I need to replace the glove box but cannot figure out how to remove the lock from the glove box door.  I've tried to unscrew it but it does not want to budge.  Is it just on tight or is there something I'm missing?

There is a thread or three on this subject but I'll tell ya, I never did get mine apart.

It is a bear and I just gave it up.

I've done this a couple of times, but not sure if i remember.  There is a little pin hole in the lock knob.  You must put in a paper clip or something similar and turn.

Tried the paper clip by it bottomed out without engaging anything.  Will try a small Allen wrench and a little WD40 on the treads I see.  I have 2 glove box locks to remove.  One has the key latch which I do have the key but still not able to figure out how to remove it.  Just so I don't break the mechanism, it appears that the latch slightly unscrews first thus exposing a few threads, then you manipulate some internal part of the latch through the key or hole if not a keyed latch.  While manipulating the internal part you twist the latch.

Question is, does the latch continue to unscrew a number of revolutions or does twist a partial revolution and then pops off?  Any additional info would be helping while I keep trying different ways in removal.

This is something so small and basic but appears to have given many a problem in replacing.  Just doesn't seem right.

On mine (no lock) there is a slot to push in a little screwdriver.  If I remember you have to latch it without shutting it if that makes sense.  Use a (very little) pressure with another screw driver and it comes out a little.  You have to depress it again and it will come out the rest of the way.  Then the pot metal piece unscrews from the latch if you need to remove or tighten it up.  Be carefull, I broke my first one on a practice junk truck.

I replaced my entire glove box a few years back.  The plastic hinges on these boxes always wear out w/ age.  I retrieved two from the junk yard.  I remember removing the latches and putting my good latch on one.  I forget the little tricks i learned, but was a pro at it for i removed many of the latches.  Here is something i found on the internet....

I would like to say thanks to all those who answered my post.  I was not able to respond back as I went in for an emergency operation and am just now out of the Hospital.  Won't be able to do any work on the truck for awhile but as least I'm alive. :)

I hope they didn't have to put a new engine in ya.--even though everyone sooner or later will need an overhaul.

I hope everything is alright--that glove box doesn't seem so important now, huh?
