One man bed removal (????)
« on: March 21, 2010, 08:15:46 pm »
Maybe that should be: "One OLD man..." ::)

But anyhoo,  I am ready to pull the bed off of my '87 short step Chevy, and
I have been soaking the holddown bolts etc.  But does anyone have a good suggestion
for picking the bed up vertically?   I have an overhead trolley in my shop, however I am worried
about the purchase points.

The bed/fender combo is in good shape and I want to pull it as a unit.   I have laid up White ash
for 4 years in prep for this and we are getting down to where the going gets tough.  I would appreciate any suggestions.

well you could take the bed sides off the bed one by one with your "trolley point" we used a come along and a tree branch anchored into a steel frame that sat inside the bed, and undid all the bolts and lifted the bed up and drove the truck off. I would say you should have a dolley or something built to be able to easily move and store the bed. Thats just my 2 cents....

OK,
But can I pick up the entire bed/fender combo at one time?

I have the power to lift it, but I do not want to break anything

Go to a Farm and Fleet type store and get 4 large eye bolts.  When you take out the bolts from the bed and get the bed loose, when underneath push the bed up and have 4 pieces of 2x4 to prop the bed off the frame.  Put eye bolts in and you have your lifting points.  I use the cheap ratchet straps when I pick mine to balance the load.  Done 2 or 3 myself.

I wish i had a lift to do mine. But all i did was back the truck up to some saw horses, and "walked" it off by myself. lol

I Like It!
But with needing 4 guys, that means 2 six packs to come out even.

At least you dont wind up with 4 leftover eye bolts!
