leaf spring hanger question
« on: October 14, 2010, 12:04:44 am »
I have a quick question? I have a 79 Chevy, SWB 2 wheel drive. I have put 2" drop shackles on it. Looking at the front leaf spring hangers, can they be flipped upside down? It seems that the two top bolts in the stock location would become the two bottom bolts (using the same holes) and you would just have to drill a couple new holes for the top bolts. I have seen the rivits removed and the hangers moved up and re bolted in giving a couple more inches of drop. Just looking at it and thinking? Am I not thinking correctly? Thanks for any help. Jason

Welcome to the forum jasonbo. I don't "think" flipping would work due to their shape. Actually you would have to flip them over and swap sides as well, but I still feel it wouldn't clear. If your trying to do a low cost drop, just move the hanger up as you suggested. This method is proven to work.

Thanks for the advice. I'll just move them up.

Take a look when you do it and see if you think it will work. Nothing wrong with free thinking..;)

The spring hangers are the same part Right & Left...the "swap sides" doesn't matter/serve any purpose. The idea of flipping over the front ones seems like it would be too much. There is theory to the placement of the spring eyes for best effects. Here is a site that will give you something to read:

I moved my front hangers up about 2 1/2" some years ago (I've since moved them back to stock & did a flip on the axle) will no real ill effects. With a 2" dropped shackle in the rear it sat fairly nice, lowered the back about 3 1/2". All of the holes needed to be drilled. Lorne
