« on: September 02, 2008, 06:23:24 pm »
hi this is my first time on here I'm 21 and rebuilding a 1983 Chevy c-10 stepside that Ive owned since i was 14 and just took it apart may of 2008 and one of my questions are, i am gonna get rid of the stock gas tank and put a fuel cell in under the bed i was wondering if anyone has done this and had any ideas or hints for me to do to make my life easier? i think a 16 gal cell will fit. how did you mount it? the other is i bought a 1987 Chevy v-8 350 from a buddy and i need the brackets that bolt to the each side of the motor for the motor mounts they have 3 bolt hoes like a triangle then a bolt slides threw it the motor mount on the frame and a nut goes on the bolt i don't know where to find them at all and i need them any info any one who can help will be great thanks

If it's going to be a street machine, I'd go with a blazer tank like Capt did (second above link).  Make note that the blazer tank Capt used is the 31 gal tank, there's also a 25 gal tank which is about 2" shallower.  Bottom sump fuel cells won't pass safety inspection, as they shouldn't for anything that sees street time.  But if its a dedicated strip machine, a fuel cell is probably the way to go.

Welcome to the site! The install by Jeff Drew is defiantly first class. I did a fuel cell a year or so ago on my fleetside truck. What I used was an Aluminum 20 Gal. Summit unit (looks to be the same in Jeg's from the pictures) with the GM sending unit. The details are pretty much the same as what Chris did (moved the rear crossmember back all the way & moved the spare tire mount up to be used as a front mount. I made straps from flat stock & notched the rear crossmember to hold them.

I made a skid plate for the bottom that bolts to the tabs that were designed to be the "hold down" tabs, to be legal NHRA/IHRA, the bottom of the cell must be covered.

Some type of notch was needed for the gas filler, but since the ends of the same crossmember need notched for the shackle/hanger, I cut the whole thing out & moved it back 3".
A lid in the floor finishes it up

The stepside is going to add a few slight differences (the wood floor & the fact that the bedsides don't hide the cell from the side).
I did a 2" (in the rear) angled body drop with part of the reason to hide the cell from the side.

As far as mounts. You can get the rubber half from a local store or dealer & the metal half from a dealer or salvage yard. Have fun & post some pictures! Lorne
