if i was building a dd with 37s i would go with 4.10s you dont need 4.56 unless you want to take off kind of fast. with the 4.10 you will be turning 1700 at 65in od. i run 4.10s with 37 but i only have the sm465 so no od. the only problem i have is top speed i do fine in the mud and hauling stuff

Find a 1996-1999 Vortec 350 core and rebuild it. You will have a roller cam, vortec heads, you can run a carburetor on it, it will bolt right in with a few exceptions like the flexplate, and possible electric fuel pump.
I bought a complete Vortec core for 350.00.

I've thought about doing this very thing, but I've never dealt with the vortec motors before. Are they basically the same as an older Chevy motor? I would be installing it in a 1977 C10.

The vortech engines are very similar the slight differences are they are drilled for the roller cam . They have hold downs for the lifters cam buttons as far as rebuilding its the same, process
