Vortec heads are hard to beat. I went with Summit cast iron heads, but vortec heads flow better. If you go with the vortec heads you can probably stick with dished pistons (similar to stock). With the heads I bought you should bump compression with pistons.

The scoop from mags etc is that the Vortec heads are about the best heads Chevy ever made. I haven't done that, so I don't know what accommodations need to be made to fit them, but someone else here can help you there I think.

Yes Vortec heads will fit any pre-1998 block, the intake HAS to change though.

from what i understand 1996 is when gm used the real vortecs (10239906 and 12558062) most people refer to the heads found on 87-95 as vortec this is true to a point but the real deal in under the hoods of 96-02 L31 head are the ones that can be swapped with 1955 through the end of 2002, with the exception of the LT1/LT4 (1992-1997) and LS eng. i had a old friend offer to sell me a 350 vortec for $200 so i been doing some research. dont know if i found is 100% but its some where to start
the L31 can be found in
19962003 Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana full-size vans
19961999 Chevrolet/GMC C/K full-size trucks
19961999 Chevrolet Suburban/GMC Suburban full-size long-wheelbase SUVs
19961999 Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon (and 2000 Tahoe Limited and 2000 Tahoe Z71 models) full-size short-wheelbase SUVs
19992000 Cadillac Escalade
again not sure if this is 100% would like to find out. but chris should know so im kind of doubting my info
i do know there was a 1996 g30 van that used the "vortec" head with tbi set up
