Any of you guys ever reupholster te factory bucket seats?
« on: July 20, 2008, 07:32:10 AM »
My 87 Silverado came with that nasty bench seat, and i was wondering if any of you had ever gone out to the junkyard and got you some old junk seats and had em reupholstered. I was thinking of getting some that way, and having that done with leather. If you have done this, how much did it cost you? Do yall think that is worth it, or would it be better just to order those that they sell from JCwhitney?

I had the factory buckets redone in my 79. I also had new carpet installed including the area behind the seats (up the rear wall as well--same as the factory did) to the tune of $1040. It's not cheap but they look great. The truck is in pieces at the body shop getting a new coat of paint, so no pics at the moment. If you go that route, whatever seats you get make sure the foam and springs are in good shape, because that's when things get $$$ when those things have to be repaired/replaced.

any good upholstery shop should either do the foam repair as part of the price of the job or tell you it's going to be an extra charge up front...there shouldn't be much charge on repairing foam or springs in a seat...the foam we use is scrap foam that we save from other jobs and most spring repairs are made with steel rod to attach the spring back to itself...if it's a bench seat and the spring carriage underneath the foam attach to the frame with springs needs to be replaced they may charge you for that, but it shouldn't be anymore that 30-40 bucks...we don't charge for any of the repairs that I mentioned...it's just something we do for our customers that costs us next to nothing if at all...

Chuck.

I sell pretty much any old vehcile seat upholstery kits that you can do yourself.  They aren't than much, but do required good foam.  I sold Jeff (bigblock73) the seat covers on these seats that are going in his truck, they are roughly $150-180 for Chevy truck bucket sets.

I was referring to the total width of them. Seems like by the time you include the center console and all, they might be a little wide.

You need to either call them direct or use one of their vendors like JCwhitney

I would guess somewhere in the area of 600 bucks. Maybe a little less.

Do you mean for a qualitex seat? They're about double that.

It's not a rip off, it's just pricey. I've had a qualitex seat in my 74 GMC for about 10 years now and it looks as good as the day I got it. They don't catapult you into the roof when you go over bumps, they fit nice and tight in the small cab these trucks have, recline, slide individually, 2 storage compartments, extra seat, cup holders. They're nice.

Here's the one in my 85 K20
