Title: putting cab from 2wd on a 4wd frame
Post by: gold84gmc on April 10, 2009, 04:37:47 pm
besides the hole in the floor for the 4wd selector is there anything different on a cab from a 4wd than one from a 2wd?

Yes, The transmission tunnel (depending on the year/tonage) may be different, just behind that (under the front edge of the seat) is higher on the 4x4.  Either a section needs cut out of the 4x4 & put in or a 2" body lift will do. Lorne

Would an 82 2wd 3/4 ton have the same tunnel as a 4wd??

I think the 4x4 tunnel has an additional hump for the transfer case closer to the seat. If the 4x4 had a 4sp then the hump would be higher.

I believe the frames are the same between 4x2 and 4x4. What is it that your trying to do? Are you going to run your current 2wd drivetrain. If so, I think you'll be fine. If you going to make it a 4wd then you'll need to convert the hump.

i might be getting an 84 gmc 3/4 ton 4wd, the cab is rotted out and has no bed so i want to put my cab and bed on that frame...the parts truck already has a 2 or 3" body lift so i was gonna use that so i wouldnt have to modify my tunnel

Oh ok. So you'll end up with a 3/4 ton 4x4 right?

the frame base is pretty much the same through most years. so your 84 will fit with the body lift no prob

I think the 4sp trucks have a bolted on hump. My 81 does.

most of the trucks that came with a manual tranny had a bolt on cover..mainly so you could remove the lever and also fill the trans easier
