Can a front bumper be white and the rear chrome, or should both be chrome? Is it possible to purchase a new painted rear step bumper, not chrome?? Thanks
-
Bumpers never came unmatched. They were either both painted, or both chrome. I'm currently running with a white front and chrome rear, simply off of necessity. If you have access to a chrome bumper, it is easy to paint it. I spray painted my front one and it looks awesome. Plus when it chips, you just keep a rattle can in your toolbox.
Personally I'd suggest matching your bumpers. I am going with both white, because my mirrors are also white. I think I may paint the top of the cab white in the future as well! It all depends on what color scheme you're running.
-
Here is what i got right now, i would love white bumpers to match mirrors and rims. (http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/09/21/6b9a43b8c413bfc667bbf5ac8e451378.jpg)

However, my rear bumper is a gray factory step type. Now what??
-
Hopefully you can open the link: http://www.73-87.com/7387info/7380_GM_ads.htm
Why doesn't any of these trucks have the very common white front bumper, is the chrome considered an upgrade, and that's why they are in the ads, because the ads always show the fully loaded models....obviously?
On a similar post, it was stated that front and rear bumpers are always the same color. I'm not sure about that, my rear step bumper is factory gray, and there ain't no way a front bumper is gray. Oh well, I guess factory front bumpers are either white or chrome. And if so, can the rear be "any color", but you have to consider regular or step style also. Oh why were there so many options!!? Does the chrome trim around the lenses indicate anything?
-
Originally rear bumpers were an option for base trucks and dealers sourced them from local shops which put their names on them, Many were grey or white. So if you got one new from the dealership it may have had the front bumper white, but nothing on the rear as it was a dealer add on.
The chrome rear bumper was also optional and generally the dealer added a chrome one to match the rest of the truck.
-
Thanks Capt. That certainly helps. You mean they actually came off the assembly line without a rear bumper?
-
VileZambonie posted another link to brochures here: http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=30143.msg252845 (http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=30143.msg252845)
A lot of trucks from GM, Ford, IHC and Dodge were delivered without a rear bumper...
-
So is it ok to have a white front bumper and a gray rear?
-
You can have a purple front bumper and yellow and black polka dot bumper in the back. It's whatever you like
-
My bumpers came from the factory with a multi-colored paint job.
-
is that when you picked it up or is that your k30 in the background?
-
What do i need to convert from a step bumper to the regular kind?
-
Or should i...(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/09/24/cfab131256cd600fcce67fca04fd19d7.jpg)

My FIL had a 1978 3/4 ton 4wd that was painted a dark green. It had white painted mirrors and a white front bumper. His step bumper was painted silver. He told me that was how it was when he bought it. He bought it new also.
-
you would need new brakets to put a factory bumper on the truck, I have then in the store.
What you have is not out of the ordinary. If you don't like the combo just paint it or switch to what you like. It is not going to make a big difference in the trucks value.
-
Sorry to keep beating this topic,,,but I just found some real proof!! About 13 seconds into this video it shows the full line of 1977 chevy trucks at this dealership, and from what we can see, NONE of them have a rear bumper!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjBo2tLuKHc
So, I guess I'm gonna keep my mirrors white, rear bumper GM gray, and fromt bumper white to match rims and mirrors. Most of the trucks in the video have white bumpers.
How would that look? Weird or normal factory?
-
Thanks!! That sounds very much what I'm trying to do, you helped me a lot. See the post with the video from 1977. Look at the prices!! Wish I could go back in time man!!
-

That's my M1028 in the background.

Nice video but the proof I found a while back was talking to the dealerships and GM. I got pulled over for no bumper when I was 18 and they gave me a ticket for no rear bumper. I went to court with the information and they threw the ticket out with the proof I had. (this was in 1988...)

I guess if you got the specific mounting kit it would
-
Sure is tough findind a normal non chrome aftermarket rear step bumper. Everyone offers only the plain one.
-
Has anyone seen this color scheme on a 73-87 square body. I really like this combo its indigo blue metallic and tan. would love to see it on a square body before i make my decision on paint colors. any help would be appreciated.
-
Thats a good combo, would look even better on a square body. My factory color is seamist green. I have not seen it anywhere.
-
IF i find free time i have a couple photoshop projects that need to be started and finished, ill try to add this one on also. shouldnt be too hard but sometimes the colors dont change easy and i have to spend some time on it
-
Ok thanks that would be very much appreciated
-
Yes, Irish..thanks. Looking forward to seing that.
I think I am just going to paint the front bumper white (like many factory ones), and order a paintable rear with the mounting brackets and paint that one white also. My rims are white and my mirrors are white and eventually I will paint the "Chevrolet" letters on the tailgate white. I would prefer to have both bumpers the same color.
Or,,,I could get stainless mirrors, and a stainless rear step bumper from "that large online catalog".
-
Could someone please list from this page (I blotted out the vendor info) what items I need to buy to convert from a step to a plain bumper? Also, the step bumper has two holes for the license plate lights, what do you do for the license plate light on the plain bumper?

-
Nice! That green is the same color as my whole truck.
-
Soon i'll be back to factory chrome rear plain bumper and OEM stainless mirrors. Will post pic when complete for opinions. I'm giving up on white all together.
-
Update, i installed stupid wrong bumper! Just ordered new one from site store. Just like my other post, "101 combinations"i understand the different generations, but why cant every 73-87 be identical!! Fleetside, stepside, wideside, dually, ...blazer, suburban! Too many options, styles, sub models! Every part should fit every vehicle!! Im just venting cuz i got the wrong bumper!
