Question on factory color schemes.
« on: September 21, 2015, 11:17:31 am »
Can a front bumper be white and the rear chrome, or should both be chrome?  Is it possible to purchase a new painted rear step bumper, not chrome??  Thanks

Bumpers never came unmatched. They were either both painted, or both chrome. I'm currently running with a white front and chrome rear, simply off of necessity. If you have access to a chrome bumper, it is easy to paint it. I spray painted my front one and it looks awesome. Plus when it chips, you just keep a rattle can in your toolbox.

Personally I'd suggest matching your bumpers. I am going with both white, because my mirrors are also white. I think I may paint the top of the cab white in the future as well! It all depends on what color scheme you're running.

Hopefully you can open the link:  http://www.73-87.com/7387info/7380_GM_ads.htm

Why doesn't any of these trucks have the very common white front bumper, is the chrome considered an upgrade, and that's why they are in the ads, because the ads always show the fully loaded models....obviously?

On a similar post, it was stated that front and rear bumpers are always the same color. I'm not sure about that, my rear step bumper is factory gray, and there ain't no way a front bumper is gray.  Oh well, I guess factory front bumpers are either white or chrome.  And if so, can the rear be "any color", but you have to consider regular or step style also.  Oh why were there so many options!!?  Does the chrome trim around the lenses indicate anything?

Originally rear bumpers were an option for base trucks and dealers sourced them from local shops which put their names on them,  Many were grey or white.  So if you got one new from the dealership it may have had the front bumper white, but nothing on the rear as it was a dealer add on.
The chrome rear bumper was also optional and generally the dealer added a chrome one to match the rest of the truck.

Thanks Capt. That certainly helps.  You mean they actually came off the assembly line without a rear bumper?

VileZambonie posted another link to brochures here: http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=30143.msg252845

A lot of trucks from GM, Ford, IHC and Dodge were delivered without a rear bumper...

So is it ok to have a white front bumper and a gray rear?

You can have a purple front bumper and yellow and black polka dot bumper in the back. It's whatever you like

My bumpers came from the factory with a multi-colored paint job.

My FIL had a 1978 3/4 ton 4wd that was painted a dark green. It had white painted mirrors and a white front bumper. His step bumper was painted silver. He told me that was how it was when he bought it. He bought it new also.
It's been a LONG time since I have been called a newbie. Just sayin....
