Saturday Aug 20th 2005: I started working on the pieces required to convert my '78 Jimmy to TPI. I had purchased an SLP TPI harness back in '95 that they were clearing out and had it sitting around for a while. A while back I picked up a TPI intake, MAP setup and Distributor. Well plans have started moving forward to convert the truck (I HATE carbs..)
Wednesday August 24th, 2005: recieved the new Blazer EFI sending unit from GM

Thursday August 24th, 2005: ordered fuel lines for a '90 Blazer -not here YET
Friday August 25th, 2005: ordered: Sensor kit, 127749 ecm (turbo app ECM), 350 TPI prom, stainless steel bolt kit, and throttle body gasket kit and it arrived on Wednesday.

Saturday August 26th, 2005: started laying out the TPI pieces and started cleaning them up.

Now that the ECM is here I can start repinning the MAP harness from SLP so it can plug into the 7749 ECM and function properly. This should be fun.

The intake I purchased was a MAF setup (85-89). I am converting the intake to MAP setup. Instead of using the normal MAP ECM (7730) I am using the 7749 computer which allows me to run a 2bar MAP sensor, which adjusts for boost. The 7730 harness is what the SLP setup is for. I have to repin certain wires for the 7730 harness to work with the 7749 ECM. I won't be using a MAF anymore.
Friday Sep. 2nd 2005:
I recieved the EFI stainless fuel lines from Classic Tube. They apparently sent me more than what I needed/wanted though, but... Anyways, here is the latest pic:

The plans for the turbo is it will be mounted under the truck where the current muffler resides. This is simular to the setup on my brothers 2000 Silverado that is running an STS Turbo kit. (where the turbo and other pieces will come from) http://www.gracemotorsports.biz/current.html It has put down 400hp (8lbs of boost) to the rear tires on a stock 5.3L with over 120K miles on it and climbing.
The 749 ECM runs a 2 bar MAP setup and it has the capability to run up to 14.7lbs of boost. I don't plan on going over this on the current motor, but in the future any chips will be reburnt by me.

Update: Wifes foot surgery has taken up most of my time the last couple weeks, but...
3 weeks ago I sandblasted the upper intake plenum and tubes.

Thursday Sept 8th, 2005: Ok, I must be on a roll. I got in the garage last night and pulled the fuel rails off and disassembled the lower intake to get it cleaned. I also got the pics of the blasted upper pieces.

Friday Sept. 30th 2005: The lower intake is now sandblasted and I played around and mocked up all of the cleaned pieces. I am still mapping out the wiring in my spare time. The original Pinout sheet I had was different than another one I found so I am going through all the wires now.

Saturday: September 30th, 2005: Started on replacing the Body Bushings on my Jimmy. Got the tank dropped, fuel fill removed and PB Blasted the bolts/nuts

Sunday: October 1st, 2005: Started on removing the bolts/nuts from the Jimmy. All but 3 came out/off. I had to tack one bolt to the body to get the nut off on the back and I had to cut the floorboard to weld the captured nut bracket back down. I imagine I will have to do the otherside this way also. Should route the new EFI lines once that is done.

Friday Dec. 8th 2006: finished up on the body bushing replacement, just need to tighten up the bolts. Started the removal of the carb fuel lines so they can be replaced by the EFI lines.

Saturday July 14th 2007: Finally got back on this... Removed all the fuel lines and the fuel pump and started on pulling the carb. Got distracted that evening by someone selling a '87 K5 for cheap, was wasted time.

Monday July 16th, 2007: Had one fuel clip left under the frame support and tried to remove it with a wrench with the motor in. Not going to be easy to get it out.

I used to run the $58 code in a '730/'749 on a boosted firebird for years. If you need any tuning tips or to bounce ideas let me know.
When I switched to the vette I couldn't mount the blower so I sold it, and run N/A for now. (so instead I built a high compression / big duration cam NA motor). The $58 stuff is good but has some quirks. For a while I was tinkering with the $60 code developed by Bruce Plecan (RIP), but it lacked support and now that Bruce has passed away it is no longer active.

I am on thirdgen as the same username, but just as a lurker.
I fell out of the loop before Bruce passed and wondered what happened to his work and if anyone was expanding on it.
I may hit you up on the $58 info (and $60). I am just trying to get it running first and will add the turbo later. My main focus is to get it running and get the 73-87chevytrucks.com truck running and twin turbo'd first.

Saturday July 21st, 2007 I had one remaining brake/fuel line frame clamp left and it was under the engine mount stand. It took about 45 minutes to get it off with a box end wrench.
Pulled out the new EFI lines and laid them out so I can get the shipping bend out, pulled the carb and had to stop to go get a family portrait.

Monday, Aug 13th: put on the blocking plate for the fuel pump, cleaned up the TPI plenum for final assembly along with the Throttle Body pieces. Put the high pressure pump and new filter on the 87-91 Blazer sending unit. Getting ready to pull the intake manifold to start putting the TPI on the engine. I still need to get a Vette fuel rail.

Saturday Aug 18th, 2007 had to clean up one of the runners had some gunk still in one of them, still soaking it. Got the plenum all cleaned up and ready. Pull the top of the motor down and removed the 4 bbl intake, set the TPI base in place and got the gas tank out and realized the spare sender I had was for a deeper fuel tank, Guess I will be getting an EFI tank now.
also realized I need a sending unit piece that will allow me to use the stock sender and the EFI sensor...

Saturday Sep 8th, 2007 Instead of getting an EFI tank I ordered a 25g sending unit for a EFI truck from Advance (PN# FG12K). Took 5 days to arrive.
Saturday Sep 15th, 2007 Took all main TPI pieces and cleaned them up and painted them over the next few days.

Friday Sep 28th, 2007 Opened the package from S&P for the rear exit/feed and SS fuel lines along with the 9th injector elimination kit and started piecing it together. Cut the return line off and installed the rear feed connection. Found that they had not sent one of the pieces for the regulator.
Saturday Sep 29th, 2007 Painted the remainder of the TPI Parts

Monday Oct 1st, 2007 Installed the EFI unit in the stock gas tank. Pulled out the EFI fuel lines recieved from Classic Tube and started straightening the shipping bends out.
Tuesday Oct 2st, 2007 placed the Feed and Return lines in the chassis only to discover the poor exhaust system that I had put on previously that was a POOR attempt will need to be removed from the truck and made again. This time the Turbo will be present for mockup.

Saturday Oct 6th, 2007 drilled and tapped the front feed line of the fuel rail with 1/8th in pipe tap. This was NOT fun.

Wednesday Oct 31st, 2007 Ordered some 42lb injectors
Saturday Nov 4th, 2007 Pressed in the 9th injector block off plug from S&P. This wasn't fun either

Friday November 16th, 2007:Injectors were delivered USPS on 14th, but weren't left. I had to go pick them up at the Post office.
Saturday November 17th, 2007: got all the bolts to the manifold off, but from the shady job of building the y-pipe from some an exhaust shop (that I didn't pay for) I now have to cut the Y-pipe to get it out...

Friday, November 30th, 2007:Picked up the 700R4 trans that need rebuilt to replace the TH350 currently in place.
Saturday December 1st, 2007:Got the fuel lines installed and clamped down short of 2 clips I would like to add on top of the missing fuel filter clamp. Put splash shield on the TPI base and then installed it. Put the S&P oil pressure tee on (for running factory sender and the TPI sender) and the thing stripped out. Yippie! Couldn't find my water outlet, have NO clue where it went so I got to get a new one. Installed the 42lb injectors in the fuel rail. Debating on whether I will run the EGR or make a block off for it.
Saturday December 2nd, 2007:Went to several parts stores to find a brass fitting that would fit under the TPI Base to replace the S&P piece, finally found the 2 I needed.

Saturday December 8th, 2007: Pulled the intake back off to put the new brass fitting in the block for the sensors. Installed the fuel rail assembly and hooked up the rear feed fuel supply and return lines. Definitely not going to run an EGR due to no room, so I have to make a block-off for it. Ordered a water outlet.
Sunday December 9th, 2007:Picked up the water neck (gotta paint it) and then searched all local stores for the parts to rebuild the 85 TPI distributor, with no luck.

Sunday January 6th, 2008: "rebuilt" a 1985 HEI unit from a Z28 so I can keep my current connections. Now I just have to make an adapter to connect the 85 big cap HEI with the 87-95 HEI...

Isn't the distributor you put rebuilt a 4 wire ESC? Why not just use a newer distributor?

It is the computer off a 85 Z28 with Tuneport. Its a 7 pin module not a 4 pin. I didn't want to spring for an Accel or MSD yet until I get the turbo on it..

I meant it had the 4 wire pigtail that goes to the ESC module not the dist module. Sorry for the confusion.

Why turbos insted of supercharging?

2) They have unlimited operational range, and I can control it with just a wastegate.
3) Power potential is higher than a supercharger
4) I love the way they sound
This is my twin brothers 2000 RCSB with stock 5.3L and a STS remote turbo... (1/4mile was 12.28...@ 109.95mp)

I don't know much about turbos except they get their power from the exhaust. Did you need larger injectors? How did you put it all together(design wise)? Is your brother helping you? I wouldn't know where to begin.

I didn't build this motor with the intention of putting a turbo on it. But I don't plan to put more than about 7lbs to it (maybe 10lbs once :D)
It does have low compression pistons which is required for any supercharging (turbo or blower) but I would feel better with forged pistons.
It does need larger injectors (It has 42lbs in it now)
He isn't helping me on this one, his company is basically a partnership between us. He does the ECM tuning for the 99-up trucks, and I will be using it when I twin turbo my 73-87chevytrucks pickup as it has a 6.0L/4L80E out of a 2000 pickup...
You can put a turbo on just about anything if you don't plan to go overboard. They should be able to take about 5lbs in a driver... I wouldn't attempt a carb'd turbo app though. Mainly because I don't like carbs.

thats awsome that ur going to be running a turbo. ive been looking into it recently and thinking about getting a small turbo and fab up all the pipes for it myself or if i can, ill buy some turbo headers instead of building them. are you going to be running it under the truck like the sts kits or under then hood? before i attempt this i need to get my new engine first lol. i definitely want more info on this project haha

The pictures LIE ;D It needs some paint (especially the cab) and the top is NASTY looking and needs painting also. The underside isn't any better. It is in need of some serious patch repair. It is a northern truck and the underside is really bad in some spots. The previous owner had it repaired, and they welded patch panels OVER the existing spots. There isn't any rockers on there, just the outer skin....

Saturday January 26th, 2008: Installed the new distirbutor and started putting the Throttle body together. Found out the runner gaskets were missing from the kit I purchase, went to pick them up.

Sunday February 17th, 2008: Finished of cleaning off the brackets, plan to polish them up some. I also picked up a 700R4 from a buddy that he pulled out of a running 91 Camaro to replace the TH350.

What info on the Turbo setup are you wanting? It is a Garret 60-1 turbo that is going to be remote mounted under the truck somewhere.

Uh, I will probably have to pass, but if you come buy and help turn some wrenches and pay for the mess after bolting it on a fresh install that I will just all over it.
We have installed a few of these STS systems, they make awesome power. My brothers 5.3L finally let go at about 170k or so. He has a 6.0L in it now.

is there any particular reason that ur switching over to a 700r4 from a th350? i noticed that ur using a turbo app. ecm because ur running the turbo but will the truck run well without the turbo but still with that computer?? youve also inspired me to consider swapping to a tpi from my current tbi

700R4 has overdrive and I plan to drive the truck = new technology. It also has 4.10 gears, and the TH350 is leaking from the pan.
Yes, it will run fine without the turbo, it just won't see any boost so it won't alter anything.

Sunday February 24th, 2008: Pulled the V-belt accessories off the front of the motor to mount the serpentine setup to the block. Gotta drille/tap a hole in the head to use it though. I also finished all the polishing to the bracket that I care to do. The other one is staying raw, or I am painting them...

Sunday March 1st, 2008: Pulled the 1978 power steering that was currently on the truck and took the 81-up steering pump off the bracket and swapped the serperntine pulley to the 78 pump. Picked up another partial set of Serpentine pulley brackets (missing the tensioner and all the pulleys). Remounted the pump back to the truck.
Sunday March 7th, 2008: Picked up an Alternator for the Serpentine, a PCV fitting for the TPI (somehow lost the one I had) and a new Thermostat. I also picked up a unused waterpump from a buddy that I got the partial Serp setup from.

Sunday March 8th, 2008: Went to my mothers house and scrounged around and found some old M/T aluminum valve covers that will probably look better than the ones on there. I also found the waterpump from a TBI that I couldn't find, so now I have 2. Went to 3 part houses to find waterpump gaskets and none of them had any, so still have to remove the pump to get the new brackets mounted. Spent the rest of the evenng until dark cleaning up the valve covers.

Tuesday March 11th, 2008: Finally got some waterpump gaskets and pulled off the waterpump and installed a the Serpentine one. Pulled off the V-belt pulley and installed the serpentine pulley.

Saturday March 15th, 2008: Cleaned up the MT valve covers and decided to just paint them. Put the waterpump pulley on and then placed the valve covers in place since I didn't have enough bolt to bolt them down.
Sunday March 16th, 2008: Got some bolts for the valve covers and installed them. Put the Serpentine brackets on and then put the Alternator on. I love these new hours.

Nice Setup so far Chris, Really like the M/T Covers as I have some for my truck 8) Just curious though, is that a Standard Water Pump, instead of a Reverse Rotation Long Pump used with the Serpentine Setup(Doesn't the Standard Rotation Pump also lack some of the proper Mounting location for the Serp. Parts???) ???

Its a serpentine water pump. The serpenting brackets don't bolt to the waterpump, the only bolt to the heads and block on the front side.
I forgot to mention that if you are doing this it is easier if you put the brackets on before the pump and pulley...

Ok I got you now,couldn't think of the missing head mounting locations, until it jumped out and smacked me in the above pic :o Thats the Passenger side, below the Valve Cover, AC Mount, to the left of the idler pulley.... Hmph never reliezed that those points would be missing from the heads, I remember seeing some of those already drilled & tapped into the Heads from my Pop's Old '79 267, and the 85 Camaro 305... Both of those engines were Pre-Sepentine Set-ups, so don't know why they would have had them... ???

Saturday April 2nd 2008:Put the Jimmy up on jackstand, pulled the driveshaft out, unbolted the trans crossmember and torque converter and pulled the selector linkage off.
Sunday April 3rd 2008: supported the engine and trans, removed the trans cooler lines, pulled the wiring out of the way, dropped the crossmember and unbolted the trans. Was doing all this by myself but ended up getting Jamie's assistance when the trans tried to fall off the jack. Got it most of the way down while holding it and then it slipped. Luckily it didn't fall. Pulled it out from under the truck and then a buddy came over with his family and played with Jamie and Elizabeth while he and I got the 700R4 up and bolted to the engine and installed the trans mount. Still gotta bolt up the converter and drill new holes for the crossmember and put the driveshaft back in.
BTW, All the pre 86 350's I have ever had only have 3 on the drivers side head front, or 2 on the drivers side back. Once you switch it to the other side it is reversed.

Saturday April 12th 2008:Bolted up the Torque converter, modified/bent and reconnected the tranny lines.
Sunday April 13th 2008:Dropped the transmission pan. replaced the filter and drilled new holes for the 700 posistion. Get this, I screwed up and ended up marking one side wrong. Yippie. Now I got to see if I can fix it..

Monday April 14th 2008: Ordered a set of Thorley Headers and Y-pipe.
Drilling these holes wrong was nothing in comparison to trying to get the trans lines hooked up, espeically the lower one. I got so mad at it I had to walk away twice.

Only thing I can figure is that they hated me. Actually the previous owner of the truck bent the crap out of the lines where they go into the trans. It has a kink about 2" back or so and I couldn't get it started. I didn't actually take pics but I can get a pic of what it looks like with it in there and my screwed up holes. :D

May 20th, 2008: Received my Header/Y-pipe setup from Doug Thorley. Haven't had time to install them as I wanted to get the holes fixed in the frame for the crossmember first.

i love the shade of blue that's on that Jimmy. i'm looking for ideas on what to paint mine...the wife wants black and while i love black, mine is a 4x4 and it's gonna get used like one. i mean, i'm not gonna beat the pee pee out of it, but i'm not driving around mudholes either...i just want something that doesn't look dirty 5 minutes after you wash it...and doesn't show every little scratch/ding

I plan to drill the holes and bolt the crossmember in and install the headers this weekend to check the fit. So more is coming.

Sunday, July 27th, 2008: Got around to pulling the Thorley Headers out of the box. Checked the contents and started installing the drives side. Still need to put the passenger side on then the crossover, but here is the "good" side"

One header at a time? Geez, you sure are dragging this out. What do you think of the Thorleys? I was pretty impressed with the fit on my set, but I'm running the straight dual type.

Well it was REALLY hot and it got late. I had to box some items for shipping and modify the kick panels for clearing the parking brake, plus I was trying to play with Elizabeth before it got too dark, so I had some distractions.

FYI: I got a call from Mike at Carquest today and he wanted to tell me about the mid-’80s police cars (Caprice) and the early Impala SS 700R4's that has the extension housing on the transmission placed at the same spot as a TH400 would mount. I didn't go this route because I "thought" I had gotten a Caprice 700 that needed to be rebuilt and then this Camaro one basically fell into my lap when I checked the other one it wasn't a Caprice so I just moved forward with drilling out the hole since the housing wasn't what I needed. The PN for this is "24214689" (old number) or "8673406" updated number.

what kind of crossmember is that?, I just put a 700r4 in my 83 , had to use the factory one...I like the one u have...

Well, it is IN a 1978 GMC Jimmy 2WD, so it fit fine since it came in there.

Little update:
Friday, Oct 3,2008: I cut on both Y-pipes that I recieved from Thorley to make one that would fit the truck. Got 2 of the pipes close
Saturday, Oct 4,2008: After some serious hacking and cutting I got the pipes cut down so they would be close enough to put together
Sunday, Oct 5,2008: Toolmaster came over and got them tacked up and weled up the pipes for me. Now I just need to send them off to get coated. No pics as my camara has screwed up on me...

Makes me glad I ordered the straight-back long tubes and had a y-pipe fab'd. How bad was it? Was it the trans crossmember or the trans itself in the way?

The first pipe I got was just WRONG. If it had the 3" collector or even a 2.5" instead of a 2.25" on it and wasn't welded so the outlet was pointing towards the framerail, I could have used it. The second was touching the torque converter WITH pressure, and on the outlet it was pressed up against the floorpan.

My first "brand new" car was turbocharged. Chevy Sprint 3 cylinder, 1 litre built by Suzuki.
A really fun car to drive. 43mpg with using the turbo.

I was looking at one for my 01 Silverado a while back, wife got pregnant, plans change..lol
They make some nice looking setups and from what I've seen and read over on PT.net, make some real power.

They are nice. My brother is a dealer for them. We R&D'd the 99-up for them (for absolutely NOTHING in return)
His truck just put down 605hp and 767lb/ft at the wheel on 15lbs of boost on a stock 02 6.0L engine, (bigger injectors and meth injection)

Friday February 20, 2009: Lined up another Fulltop conversion that has another windshield frame and full top. I am going to pick it up in Nashville on the 21st.
Saturday February 21, 2009: I cut the drivers rocker box off and cut the trans tunnel out and the quartered the remaining pieced up for scrap. I also started addressing the shoddy patching on my Jimmy...

Weekends of Saturday April 4th thru June 6th, 2009 : started pulling the botch job that the Previous owners bodyman attempted. Which was just cover up the rust not fix it. There are several areas where I am going to have to undo ard redo on this truck. I am tempted to have it blasted and start fresh, but... Both driver and passenger areas has repair pieces tacked over some MAJOR rust, the rocker on the drivers side was replaced, but it is all alone, no backing plate and was seamed to the floorpan. Drivers side the rocker was just fit over the existing one that is rusted out completely. Both sides had slip over floor supports and the rear supports are rusted through. Over the course of the next few weekends (other priority projects distracting) I have removed most of the rust enough to order some major pieces (still need more the deeper I get) I really don't now how I am going to address this yet, but....
If it keeps raining today I will be pulling the wiring out along with anything else that I feel will be in the way.
