Tool box?? Anyone have one of these?
« on: February 12, 2006, 12:01:00 am »
My truck is a 73' and I have a "tool box" on the side of the bed (drivers side) and it has no latch so I cant open it. Any info on these would be great.

They were optional and are exterior Tool/Space compartments.  It would take a different key than what came with the truck.  It should have a plastic box behind it.  If the latch is missing I don't know why you wouldn't be able to open it as the latch is what keeps it closed.

well second time treplying to this, don't know what happened to the first one?
I would try using a long skinny screw driver and turn the inner latch mechanism if it is still there. like you would a trunk without the lock cylinder.

I dont know how it stays shut but there is no lock on it at all. You can look right inside the box throught the key hole area.

This could be almost as good as when Geraldo Rivera uncovered the Mystery of Al Capone's Vault in 1986 ...LOL!

Hopefully you find a stash of cash hidden in there, but on the other hand, if there is an odd odor coming from it then I'd contact a good lawyer first :)

Good Luck!

Man I have been wondering what happened to all of the '67-87's that had the Bedside Tool/Storage Cubbies... :o  I grewup seeing the majority  of the Local Big3 Fleetsides with them, but most of the dipsticks either let them rot out, or did a crappy job trying to weld them closed :-[

I always wanted to do one like Colt Seavers had on his truck. The latch was between the cab and bed, the whole side opened up almost to the gas filler door area.

Yeah I hear ya Blazin, I also liked the Stunt Driver Hidden Compartment on Colt's Jimmy's....
Here's a Scale Model of Colt's Jimmy in one of it's last configurations

Originally the Box had a Door that was built into the side of the Driverside Bedside, it was built so that a Stunt driver could hide out of sight, then he could switch places with Colt(Lee Majors) for various Driving/Jumping Manuvers....  After a bunch of Fans had discovered, and inquired about the Panel cut into the side of the Truck, that the decision was made to incorperate it into the show theme....  Eventually it was decided that the Truck should have access to the Box on both sides, so that it was easy to make crew swaps no matter which side of the truck was the camera....  If I remember correctly, Colt's trucks was one of the First to have a Blazer/Suburban Gas tank mounted between the rails at the rear. As the Stunt Driver Box extended into the Mounting Area for the saddle tanks, and having the tank mounted in the Rear, also aided in some of Jumps that the Truck made for different episodes.....
