Which hubs are recommended?
« on: December 07, 2008, 07:01:09 pm »
One of the things I am doing to my K10 extended cab is change the automatic hubs. Which ones are the best,Warn, Milemarker, or Superwinch. Since I am going to be the rear end, and putting on the lift, I want to address this at the same time.
Also, I was told I would have to get the front drive shaft lenghtened because of the lift, is there a company that make them already, or will I have to get it built? Thanks guys in advance.

If you aren't going over 4" lift you should be fine with the front shaft. I have used all of those hubs and they all work the same.

Thanks Vile, I am going with a 6 inch lift since that is what the donor truck has. I just want to do it right the first time, well, except for the lift blocks in the back, they will be temporary until I can get the rear springs. I wish I could put the 38's from the donor truck on, but dont want to use the 3 inch body lift. Oh well.

Not of the donor truck yet, but will try to tomorrow. I will try to get some during the swap though. Heres where the parts are going. I imagine the best I can go is 35's without butchering the body.

I use a local guy that rebuilds my driveshafts (driveshaft shop) very nice job and better result than the factory.  That would be your best bet to find a shop.  I would wait until the lift is on the truck and get the measurements from center cap to center cap.  You will get the best result that way.  I use some of my trucks hard and ride with a lot of abused trucks.  Lockouts are a common blowout.  I swear by warn premium hubs.  Worth the extra money, lifetime warranty and have never let me down.  I have them on 3 trucks now and never had a problem yet.  I have wiped out other brands.  If you don't drive hard at sand dunes like I do you might get by just fine with anything though.

I have a father in law that works for Drive Train Specialties here locally, so I will probably just take the truck to him, and let them do their thing. I was just wonderin if anyone pre made shafts so I could just order one, I guess I just need to be more patient, lol. What lift and tires are you runnig Dunedigger. I have thought about doing some mild playing at the dunes, and was wondering if 35x12.50s would do.( Id like to go bigger, but dont think I can with the 6 inch lift, even though I will be bolting the 38s on just in case. I have played the dunes before but on quads only.

I run 4" and 6".  My blue truck I stayed with 4" I wanted a lower center of gravity.  I know not much difference but I kept my rear driveshaft length that way.  I did have the front shaft lengthend.  There was no way it was going to work even though it is not necessary with a 4" lift.  I don't know what was going on there cuz another truck I have was just fine with a 4".  As far as tire size there are too many factors there.  HP, gear size, and tire are a huge factor there.  Sand is very HP robbing and big tires are a killer for under powered trucks being that wheel speed is what you need to keep up momentum.  If you have the right one of any of those three things you can do very well or if you have the right combination of all three you will go anywhere.  That being said I can only speak for the dunes I run, I also know sand texture means a lot too and am not familiar with the dunes there or hill size.  At silver lake you can manage with just about anything 4wd if you stay off the bigger stuff.

The sand dunes around here a extremely dry, but not big hills like Glamas. I dont plan on racing through, just kinda cruisin around and looking in the blowout areas ( I hunt arrowheads for a side hobby)  I am pretty sure the 35s are where I want to stop anyway, just so I can have room for flex, and not destroy the gear ratio like you said. What size tires are you running with the 4 inch lift?

305/70R16  By the way, I never took a picture but the before and after with the tapemeasure to the bumper raised the truck 7 1/2 inches.  I had to verify it was a 4" lift and it is the same part number as my other truck with a 4".  All my 4" shocks etc were right.  I wonder where they base the lift hieght from?
