1982 straight 6 swap
« on: May 01, 2009, 08:19:30 pm »
hello i have a couple of ? i pulled this motor out of a 1977 truck i bought I'm not sure which engine it is,but i know its strong as heck but the guy i bought it from got it in a trade so he knows nothing about it.So since the body was in horrible shape i bought a 1982 sierra straight 6 truck that i am going to do the swap on.I was wanting to know what all will need to be changed for me to drop this in i know in the 1977 the power steering lines where very close to the frame so they cut a little section out to clear the lines but I'm thinking they done because of the front belt setup. Sorry to be a pain but I'm learning.

You aren't being very clear on what exactly you are trying to do. Are you swapping a V8 in place of the 6 cylinder? Do you need help ID-ing the V8? What's the casting # near the bellhousing?

reposition the frame stand to the 8 position and if it came out of a pickup and you got the engine mounts, drop it in.

the image label pic 6.jpg is the frame stands I am talking about.
If you clean those off, there will be 2 sets of holes, one with a 6 buy it and one set with an 8 beside it.  Just unbolt it and move it to the "8" selection.

Did you find the casting numbers that Vile mentioned? They are on the rear of the block on the drivers side where the bellhousing bolts to the block. It does look like a newer motor or an older block with centerbolt heads and newer accessories.

Yes i found them it says 5.0 so im thinking its a 305 when i was told it was a 350 but compared to my other 350 engines it seems to be one heck of a torque monster

I believe what you have is a crate 305 and if it's anything like mine it's no torque monster.
