efi into a 86 truck with dual tanks?
« on: March 16, 2009, 12:14:03 am »
Hello: I am new to this forum and this is a great website. I have a quick question. I am installing a ramjet 350 into a 86 4-wheel drive and was wondering if you can use the selector valve yet. It has dual tanks and I thought there might be someone out there that has done a tpi into one of these. They run about the same fuel pressure. My concern was the return pressure being to high for the selector valve to handle it. Any info would be great. Thanks

Fuel pressure is the same as what? TPI 47psi, Carbureted 5 psi, tbi 13psi. The valve shouldn't be an issue just make sure you are using the correct pump and lines.

You need a selector universal selector valve for it, the Carb one will probably have issues.

As far as fuel pressure the tpi and the ram jet run similiar pressures. Was going to use a inline pump and steel braided an6 hose and fittings. What is the different style of selector valve intail that was mentioned. Anyone have a link to it or some info. Thanks

If you think your oem valve can't handle it then just get the universal/direct fit from autozone etc. Use a submersible pump don't use an inline pump unless you want to do what ford did and use 2 lift pumps and a boost pump. You will have nothing but problems trying to run an inline pump.

The inline pump is what gm perf recommended and several other web sites such a car craft and others that have installed these ram jets. I know about the vapor locking issue. Has anyone used these universal switching valves before. I found them with a google search so I know what they are now. They look like the oem valve but I understand they have a motor that moves the internal valve and holds it in one position and rated at 65 psi.  ;D  Sounds like a 87 selector valve. Didn't they have a motor and lock it to one side. I thought those worked like that.   If I have any problems I guess the universal is worth a try.

I have a universal Switch valve on my 87 pickup.  I would not run an inline pump, I would use and EFI sending unit with a Corvette pump.

Just went thru this personally... got the dual tanks also on an 85...
you need 2 new sending units for that pickup ( 87 model had submerged pumps...) use the sending unites but you need to get 2 of the fuel pumps from a vette or tpi car that will go on these sending units...( receipt not handy)
you need the harness from Street and performance for the dual tanks...you can get the Pollack swithcing valve from JC whitney ( cheaper - but not the only source) it needs to be a 6 port because you now have return lines etc and needs to get to 65 psi - the orig valve will blow at like 20 something...not good...I also got a fuel line kit from Street and performance and a brake booster line and guage for the fuel rail...
I was going to do the single inline pump but age has made me wiser - plus the tech advice out there pointed me in this direction...I drove mine this weekend and it performs without a hitch!
I will attempt to look up the fuel pump p/ns... they were like 90 bucks ea...
whole dual tank setup aint cheap - but its cheaper to do it right the first time...
85 shortbed...She digs it...

I got both of my sending units from Rockauto the cheapest. I got my pumps from autozone.
