Cargo Lamp Switch
« on: May 15, 2009, 09:58:28 am »
My '85 K20 cust. deluxe doesn't have an existing cargo lamp. The plan is to wire up some of those LED strips under the lip of the bed on each side. I would like to control these from the factory light switch inside the cab.

Thing is, since my truck didn't have a cargo lamp originally, I don't know how this was set up.

My dash light switch has the rheostat and one click position for the interior cab light. What I need to know from those of you with cargo lamps, how is the switch set up. Do you have an additional switch? Same switch with two click positions? Can I just grab a switch from a silvarado and replace the existing switch?

on my truck, the cargo light comes on whenever the dome light is on - whether you click the switch or open a door.

I'm doing my cargo light up on a seperate switch.  That way, I can be driving down the road at night and flip the light on to check on the cargo if need be.

The cargo light switch is on the drivers side behind where your head is. It was wired to the interior door jam switch and was overridden by the switch. From the factory you couldn't turn the cargo light on without either opening the door or turning the interior lights on. So if you want cargo lamps you can put the switch in the factory location but I would run a separate circuit so you can just turn them on independently.
