Replacing Locking hubs on 76 Scottsdale
« on: July 28, 2009, 05:55:56 pm »
I bought some warn locking hubs because the OEM plastic locking dial would not lock the hubs anymore. So I just bought all new Warn locking hubs. Just the locking mechanism, not the entire wheel hub. Does someone here know or know where I can get info on replacing the locking hubs on my truck? I started to do it but I got to a point where I cant figure it out anymore. I looked in my chilton as well and its not real clear. Do I need to remove the hub bolt? If someone knows how to do this or has done it themselves before I would love do get a step by step or at least direct me somewhere.

I appreciate the instructions Vile. I think those are the instructions that came with the hubs. After reading them a second time they make a little more sense. The only question I have is, it mentions something about spindle nut clearance. I dont see anywhere in the instructions where I have to take off the spindle nut. That and I got the Dust cover, the selector knob, one gear and 2 of the lock rings removed and I cant seem to get the main gear part off. It moves but wont come out. Im going to mess with it some more to see if I can get it off or maybe start over if I can. That is the main problem I am having with this. In any case, thank you for the info. I really appreciate it.  Brian.

Did you take the snap ring off?

Yeah, I finally got it. The things I was missing was stupid. I didnt realize there was a pick lock ring that held in the body. Once I cleared some of the grease away I saw it. Then I couldnt get the Warn body to fit. So I drove all the way to Napa because I thought I had the wrong part. They verified the part number and it was the right part. So when I got back I looked inside the hub hand saw that the wheel bearing lock nut needed to be tightened. Duh!! If I would have just looked in there to begin with I would have saved myself 30 minutes of jacking around. Anyway, got it done and they look and work great. Chalk up another task that I know how to do now. I love doing this stuff!! Thanks for all your help Vile. I really appreciate it. Brian.

Glad you got it. There is an inner nut, a lock nut and a jam nut for preloading and retaining the hub bearings.
