Need information and any advice I can get.
« on: August 10, 2009, 02:20:54 am »
Hi everybody, I've been reading alot of post on this site and I think I'm in the right place.

First of all I have a 1977 k10 chevy sport shortbox stepside[not stepside yet,but have the bed]. This is my first 4x4, but not my first truck. I can do alot of stuff myself[grew up on a farm] but some things I just can't figure out. The truck{heather is her name} has a 350, 203 transfer case and th350 transmission, and a 4 inch suspension lift, dana 44 front and 12 bolt rear. Some of my questions are as follows:

It has the lock outs on the front but I don't know if it has the kit in the case. How do I find out?
When hubs are free, and tc is in low/loc, I put her in gear she lurches against the brakes like a wild stallion. When she does this it twists the rear end down. She does this in low also. When in what I think is four high she slowly slips into gear and pushes against brakes[as hard as my wife helps when I cut firewood] but rear end stays put.
Shift pattern is [from front to back] low/lock-low-n-high-high/lock [unless I have tc kit]  When I put her in neutral and shift the tc I get low/lock-low-n-and only one more spot up from there. I've looked at the linkage but as I don't know exactly what it should look like, I couldn't do much about it.

Iknow there is more than this but we'll get to that later. Payed $800.00 for her,so have some extra for parts[cosmetic surgery later]. I'll try to get a picture up on my next post. Thanks in advance for any help.I do have thicker skin so if I say or do something stupid don't hesitate to tell me.

I

Your first problem is naming it Heather.

Lubricate the linkage on the transfercase and ensure it is comining out of low range.

naming your truck ain't bad its just naming it a females name then putting those truck nuts on it making her a hermaphrodite.  ::) a couple way into testing the t/c is putting it in a non locking position make sure the hubs are unlocked then have the wife or someone drive it forward slowly and see if the front shaft rotates if it does you don't have the kit. there are other ways but one not sure how to do them and two that way to me is easer

Thanks for advice. Will do and check both of your suggestions,as soon as possible.
Also to V: If you think naming my truck is my first problem, I'm gonna be your best friend for life. Actually naming my trucks makes it easier for me when I type [typing two fingered], it takes a-lot more typing to say my truck than to say her [ 4 hunt and peck vs 7], and I had a ex with that name who was a clean freak, so I thought it was fitting.

To cowboy; NO truck nuts, one pair in her is enough. I don't know about the wife's help [ see firewood example above], but I will have someone look at that with me.

Any ideas on why the rear end has the twist when I put her in gear[could actually shorten that to put'r in gear] is this what you guys call axle wrap, or something else?

Your twisting of your rear end in low or low-lock will be normal, its just the chian and gears cathing up each other NP203 is a full time TC if you have lockers on front you most likly have a part time kit in TC other wise you would have to have TC in hi or lo loc to even move truck
