new cam break in
« on: September 03, 2009, 10:21:25 pm »
ok guys a question. my freshly built 350 in my 1977. im gonna put rotella in it to break cam in.  i know your supposed to run it right away at 2000-3000 rpm in variable speeds.  well i got it running and i ran it only about 5-10 min tops at around 800- 1500 rpm just to make sure it would run the shut it off.   anyone think im ok and havent done any damage to cam do u???  i know they say u can damage it not break in correct but i should be ok with short run time right? ???

people have different opinions on this.  When I broke mine in i ran it for steady for 20 minutes at 2,000 rpms.  The main thing is to keep oil spurting all aound inside the engine, especially for the cam lobes.
Did yo prelube the lobes prior to putting it in?

the engine was rebuilt when i got the truck, so im assuming they were lubed. the engine was never started till i got it . its pretty much stock with mild cam, all hydraulic lifters.  bored .30  high volume oil pump

just hope the 5-10 min i run it didnt hurt the cam,   wouldnt think it would

Don't worry about it (whats done is done) just do the 20 at 2K, run it for about 1K miles change the oil and filter and cut the old filter apart and look for metal in the pleats. If your anal about it after the 20 at 2K cut the filter apart and look.

Run it to operating temp and very the speed over 2K rpm. Set your timing, set the idle speed and then change the oil. Use this for the break in period.
