5 PC cab repair or new cab
« on: October 17, 2009, 09:14:03 am »
I have a 76 GMC truck that needs the 5 pc cab repair kit left and right and kick panels left and right , This truck was give to me by my grandpaw before he passed away,
OK my question is.
Should I replaced the rust on the cab OR use a different cab.
( if I use a different cab its not my grandpaws truck )
I have a 79 cab that needs right rocker and small part of the floor . could I cut out the floor and rocker and cab corners on that cab and put on the 76 cab.

all the inner metal is good on the 76 cab , and the 79 cab .

I hate to cut up a good cab to replace metal on another cab.
Give me some ideas , Thanks
I can post photos if needed ,

If the cab is easily fixed then buy the tin and fix it but if it's rough and you have a better cab then swap it out.

I agree with vile,
swap cabs if the 79 cab is in better shape and just replace the bad areas on the 79 .

thanks
pat

p.s. if you got the welding skills i say do the 5 piece kit if the truck has sentimental value.

well the truck does have sentimental value. And I can weld . But the money for 2 5pc cab repair set's plus 2 kick panels dont come so easy. it would be about 250 to fix the floor on the 76 and 40 to fix the 79.

and something else about the 76 the doors were rusted bad Thats why I got the 79 , I would have to change the doors out also,

I guess I'm trying to make my self not feel so bad about swaping the cab out . cause the truck does have alot of sentimental value.
If I changed out the cab's and swap the vin's and no one would no.

Only difference will be in the doors.I think it was mentioned here 73-76 shared the same doors 77-91 were all the same as well. The difference is in the mounting and framing for the door panels.. So if any purists(i`m sure if they knew what they were looking at could point it out) wanted to nag about the different doors i say go for the swap ,Keep the 76 cab if you want to and you could work on it lil by lil and save it for another project or cut it up and get rid of it.I had to do that to my 80 cab, it was so bad of shape i already fixed it once and the p/o fixed the rockers once and they needed replacing again. So i just found another cab that was rock solid and swapped vins and just replaced the cab corners and got me a NEW 80 cab lol..
thanks
