4X4 PROBLEM. I AM GRATEFUL FOR ANY HELP OR SUGGESTIONS
« on: January 14, 2010, 05:20:19 pm »
i have a 73 chevy truck 4x4. Just bought it for 500 bucks and needs work of course. It will turn out to be a great looking truck and ruun perfect when I get done with it. Anyways to the ssue at hand. As i got it started and drove it don the street , it began to dip in the rear end as if it was a lowrider. i then had my buddy drive as i tried to see what the issue was. The front right wheel is locking up and not spinning properly. I checked to see if maybe the e-brake was stuck on in that wheel but it wasn't. Im sure there are numerous things that could be wrong but i know nothing about 4x4 which i'm sure is problem number one. Can i get some ideas of what to check for. thanks.

I would check it in this order, the caliper, the brakes, and the brake line.

I second what has already been mentioned with the addition of inspecting the condition of the wheel bearings.

If the right front wheel is locking up it's not your e-brake. Jack it up, check the bearings and check the brakes as mentioned.

The problem happens when you're driving around with the floor shifter in 4 HI or with the front hubs engaged?

i still dont understand why the rear would "dip" due to the front binding up? i take it you have auto hubs.

yes the front 2 hubs are locked and stuck. i tried moving them to the unlock position yes it seems as they are stuck. why did the back dip i have no idea. as i said im still new to this 4x4. all i ever owned before was an impala and ls1 camaro ss. so the whole truck thing is new but fun to learn. so after disconnecting  the front drive shaft it no longer dips or gets stuck. although i do have the bar just hanging and dont see how to take it off from the back end of it. and i was and still am drivin it in 2 hi so it wasnt that i had it in 4hi . i was told if i convert to a 2 wheel drive car and put sway bars it will drive and handle better so im looking into that.

I would take the hubs apart and figure out why they are stuck. Warn manual hubs is what I would put in after you take them apart.

Was it doing this dipping when you were turning it or driving on pavement?

Convert the truck to 2WD?  By way of what?  make it so it is part time 4x4 or swap the drive train.  Don't really understand.
