one piece rear main seal
« on: March 15, 2010, 10:31:31 pm »
So I have my 454 out of the truck and on the engine stand, it has been leaking oil around the rear of the motor for some time and is getting worse so I finally pulled it to do some other things to it while its out.  The motor is a goodwrench 454 with the one piece rear main seal and I have no idea how to go about changing this seal and putting the new in.  I looked on autozone and it says I need a special tool to reinstall the new seal.  Is there anyone who has done this before that can walk me through it so I can get this thing back in the truck?  Thanks guys!

Just pop it out with a screwdriver being careful not to scratch the crank. If the crank is scored get an offset seal. When you install the new seal make sure you lubricate it and walk it onto the lip without folding it. If you need to you can easily make an installer. Make sure it's square and flush. You can also put some liquid teflon around the exterior of the seal.

So the rear main cap doesn't come off then?  Just pull the seal out and put the new one in?  I have the oil pan off already and thats where I stopped.

I always clean the pan up then dolly out the lip around the bolt holes on a steel bench to square it up,most leaks occur through over zealous tightening, thin coat of gasket sealant apply the gasket, let it cure and refit to the correct torque.. ;)

Yea I will replace the pan gasket, so no need to remove the main cap? The seal just comes out the back huh? Thanks!
