SM 465 Granny eliminator?
« on: February 28, 2010, 09:33:47 am »
Since my 74 see's mostly freeway miles I wonder if there is a granny gear eliminator kit available for it. I remember doing this to a T18 in my brothers Ford about 5 or so years ago but neither of us can remember where the kit came from.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would just get rid of the granny tranny all together. Do you want to keep it a stick?

I don't see how getting rid of low gear would help you on the highway?

nv4500 swap? expensive but would be awesome. I'm planning on doing it when funds are squared away for it.

I do want to keep it a stick shift, the kit for the Borg Warner transfer eliminated granny low and added another gear at 4th. A 5 speed swap crossed my mind but I remember this kit costing less overall.

That sounds perfect!  I was wondering what you guys thought about this, giving it a taller rear gear as in if it has a 4.11 give it more like 373 to give it longer legs up top.  If thats too tall to take off you could even use the granny for normal driving, pretty much I was thinking that would make it so you have 4 usable gears.  Does that make sense to anyone?  Seem possible?

I got in touch with Novak engineering out of Utah and apparently the overdrive gear kit I got for my brothers Borg Warner trans is not made for the 465. He also did some math and what I thought was a .307 rearend is actually more like a 355. I may re-gear the differential down to a 307, I'm going on vacation in June and don't really want to spend 12 hours one way wound up at 3k or higher.

with out an over drive trany 3.07 will put you at about 2500. something else to think about is just taking off how hard will you have to push the gas to take off. but yeah 3k is a little high for a long cruise but i never heard of a 3.55, a 2.56 yes or a 3.44 410 456 373 488. i would find out what rear you have then see from there the best way is to pop that cover count teeth or write down the numbers on the rear and post them how you see them
