flex plate teeth number

I have a 1984 chevy with a 305 i bought a new starter which has 9 teeth does anyone no if i need the 153 tooth or the 168 tooth flex plate?

Did you compare it to your old starter?

someone correct me if I am wrong, but, if the starter bolt patter are in a linear line paralell with the engine block end, the starter is for a 305 w/ the smaller flexplate.  If the two starter bolts are off set, not in paralell with the engine block end, the starter is for a 350 or 400 with the 168 tooth flex.  At least that is what i read years ago somewhere and it seems to work when i strip parts off at salvage yards--that info works for my truck in matching up parts. I know I have the off set two bolt hole starter and i have the 168 tooth flex.

no i cant compare it to the old one the guy thta had the truck before me put a new starter on and it grinds a bit. so i rebuilt the motor and i wanna fix this problem. i will let ya no how many teeth my flexplate has now.

There are two diffrent sizes on the flex plate about an inch diffrents if its grinding it should only need shims if it was the wrong size flex plate then I don't think it would contact at all

ok maybe thats what was wrong i counted the teeth on the old one and it was 163
