'67 Chevy auto tranny problems
« on: May 24, 2010, 02:11:37 pm »
My father in law has a mint '67 chevy, but hasn't driven it in a few years because one morning it suddenly lost all forward gears.  All I know is that its an automatic--not sure if they used TH350 or powerglides or what in that era truck.  Someone has told him that its likely just a gummed up valve body, but I was wondering if anyone here knew how likely that was.  I'd like to help him out by getting it going again.  Could I drop the pan and pull the valve body and clean it or what would be the best first step here?  I know little of transmissions other than swapping.

Most time if its gone you will slowly lose it so it does sound like its not a big problem probably stupid but check the fluid if that's. Been done idk not a trany guy

check for the color and smell of the trans fluid if it still red it could be gummed from sitting. if its brown or maroon and smells burnt it could be something bigger

A 67 Chevy what? You need to tell us what trans is in it. It only has reverse?

Sorry.. its a c10 shortbed with a 283 but again I don't know what tranny.  I can i.d. the tranny the next time I make it out there.  He drove it down his long driveway to get the mail one morning and had only reverse after that.  It sat some but was driven from time to time with no transmission problems before that.  That was probably five years ago.  Its been stored in a nice dry building since.  Just wondering if there was an obvious next move to try and get it going.

Check the fluid level first but if it's ok, check your line pressure. If no pressure drop the pan and make sure the filter is installed.

Thanks much for the replies.  Fluid was checked and was full.  Color and smell was fine.  Not familiar with checking line pressure.  Put a gage in line on the lines to the radiator?  I'll try to get out there soon and check this out.

There's a pressure tap on the case but we really need to know what trans is in there.
