Clutch cable conversion?
« on: December 03, 2010, 06:38:41 am »
1981 C30 Flatbed Wrecker, 350 4bbl, SM465 w/PTO, cast alum bellhousing, 10.5 dually w/4.10, split driveshaft, Michigan Weight Reduction (RUSTY).

Wow where to begin? Well as you might already know Michigan likes to ruin Chevy Trucks with SALTY roads, my beast shows how things are here in the rust belt. Pitted steel, holes in the cab, Pringles brand potato chip sized pieces falling off everywhere, ever so saggy cab with a wonderful road inspection window  located on the floor. Cracked windshield (my fault, I was chipping golf shots in the back yard... hit in the dead center on bottom and spider webbed the whole thing), slider window with various antenna cables running into the cab, Chrome Hood Pins, Rust free china fenders, plastic/fiberglass visor, snapped vent window hinge pin... and so on.

Okay here is the dilemma, with a sad cab the clutch will regularly come out of alignment. I have to do the old backyard shuffle and readjust it without freezing my digits off. I would LOVE to find a company that either has a conversion kit or find out if other vehicle manufactures had a cable clutch assembly.

The Idea is to eliminate the mechanical rod and cross bar thingy.

I have spent some time in the local salvage yards and it looks like most are dumping the old and trusty vehicles for the newer computer run stuff.

I will post in the next few hours or days pics and or youtube videos.

Long live the Square body Chevy truck family.

Hydraulic clutches are nice.  However, how about just bracing up your cab?  If you can't weld could some angle iron screwed into place eliminate the sagging and clutch adjustment problems?

My cab is so saggy... that the column is almost resting in my lap as I cruise. I have another cab that will migrate onto this frame in the spring. I can weld with my old buzz box, not so well on sheet steel.

I would love to pay crazy cash for a hydro get up but I see a few problems, like not being able to afford it or being able to feel when the clutch is about to go... slipping. I looked at the Novak kit and it seems great but I didn't see a master cyl for the truck... some kit that is. I don't want to source race car parts for the master cyl, used or new it will cost a mighty shiny penny (through Speedway Auto or Jegs).

What I am looking for is if someone had/has or is building a conversion from scrap and salvaged parts. Using an emergency brake cable housing and swedging on their own links and clevis' or eyelets. I read somewhere in Google land that the ever loathed Ford Rustang has a kit that will convert it to cable, also some other Ford trucks are equipped with STOCK cables too... So why not my truck?

These trucks came with hydraulic clutches so all you would need is the parts from say a 1991 V30 and they're direct fit.

If your cab is really as bad as you say then the only real advice I can give is to fix it right. If your steering column is basically falling out you need to do something structurally.
