1985 Chevy Diesel quits when turning right
« on: February 12, 2011, 06:07:17 pm »
My 1985 Chevy silverado diesel cuts off when I make slow right turns. At the time it cuts off my foot is off the gas pedal and either on or off the brake and as I turn it cuts off. It has done this about 10 times in the last few days, but only when turning right. I had changed the fuel filter last Saturday, but it only started cutting off in the last couple of days.  It will immediately restart with the key. I thought it might be related to the ignition switch, but when the truck quits, the radio will stay on and as I said it will restart with no problem.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Thanks,

Jimo

I would say it's stalling. An incorrectly adjusted or inoperative cold start idle up solenoid will cause the engine to stall when the throttle is released. Is the injection pump timed correctly too?

Thanks for the suggestion.

As far as I know it is timed correctly-it has not had the timing set since I got it and I have had put 20k on the truck over the last two years with no problem . It runs fine other than when it quits. It will re-start immediately and run with no problem.   I have wired  up a small light to the fuel solenoid and I have the small light on the steering column where I will see if the light cuts off when the engine quits which would tell me that somehow the fuel solenoid is loosing power.

I have considered the possibility that the problem is in the ignition switch since it is on the steering column and the truck only cuts off when I brake and turn right.
The radio does not cut off when the engine quits, so I would think that everything is still getting power through the ignition switch.

It has only happened as I turn right while my foot is not on the fuel pedal. It has not cut off while stopping when going straight or while slowing and turning left under the same circumstances.

As information the tank is full and the truck is fully warmed up when this happens.

I have also bled fuel from the filter while it is running to see if there is air in the system, but there is no air.

Also as information, the fuel filter was changed last weekend, but I don't see how it could be related as It did fine for the next five days as I drive it daily.

Thanks,

Jimo

Problem turns out to be a loose tilt steering column which momentarily turns off the ignition,
