Difference in Bed Sides Regarding Fuel Fill Neck
« on: May 10, 2011, 09:02:03 am »
So I am wondering...(I did some searching first but couldn't find anything) It seems that there are a couple of different configurations on the fuel fill setup on our Fleetside 3rd gen. trucks.

1) Pre-'79 trucks with the gas cap on the side of the bed.  These are the lovely ones that are forever spilling gas down the side or our paint!

2) 79-86 trucks with the fuel door and the fuel fills with the two little wings on either side that screw to corresponding tabs on the inner bedsides

and

3) 87 (91) trucks with the fuel door and the fuel fills that have a round ring and a sort of boot that goes between it and the bedside along with a ground strap.

Now my question is this: Can the 79-86 beds be made to work with the 87 (91) fills and vice versa?  I know that the panel that holds the 79-86 fuel fills un-bolts, but I'm not clear on the rest.

The reason I ask is because on my Crew Cab it has a pre '87 bed on it but still has the '91 fuel fills just sitting in the opening not bolted up.  I obviously want to fix this.

Put pree 87 fuel fill tubes on it.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

No body knows?!

I'm wondering if it is possible to convert my earlier bedsides to '87 (91) bedsides by just getting the junkyard parts and bolting them in, or do I need to swap entire bedsides to make it work?

Sweet!  Just unbolt the other inner shield/fill mount and bolt the other stuff in?!
