The money you spend in the conversion will outweigh the fuel savings. Did one of these fall in your lap?

I currently have a ZF6 from a 2002 Chev sitting, waiting for a transplant into my 1986 1 ton.

The 6 speed is a 2wd version, I got lucky......34000 km on the trucks odometer and I paid $1000 for the transmission.  I also already had a divorced NP205 sitting around anyways.

The ZF6 is a big transmission, it's tall, long and heavy (about 220 lbs or so) and slightly worries me that I will need a body lift to even fit it under my floor.  Either that or some good transmission hump modifications.

I wouldn't be looking for one specifically, in fact I would more so lean towards the NV4500 due to its size and availability.  That being said, I found mine by accident and it was the same price as what people wanted for a used 4500 with more miles on it, so I wasn't about to turn it down.

I'm actually sorry now I didn't take the 8.1L that was bolted to it for the extra $1000 :-\

My bottom line I guess, if you find one cheap and in good shape, go for it.  But if you have something like a 2wd half ton, there are other 6 speed options out there that would do fine.

I hate to say it, but it might be easiest to take the transmission with the t-case thats currently on it and covert your truck to a drivers side front diff.

I've seen a thread in the past about someone who mated an NP205 to the back of an Allison.  The ZF-6 has the same rear end as the Allison in the 4x4 applications, so if an adapter can be done for the Allison then the ZF shouldn't be a problem either.

Therefore, if the NP205 can be used, an NP241 can be used as well.  Not too sure about the NP208 though.
