Why a 73-87 ?
« on: October 22, 2011, 09:24:01 pm »
I was asked this a few times when I was looking for one, was told I should get a 67-72. I have always liked the 73-87 the best, have owned 4 so far, look and handle great I guess.
It's a matter of preference and was certainly glad to find a site dedicated to these year models.

I think I love them because growing up as a kid in the 70s, there were several guys my age now, and several old bucks that I looked up to around my town that had them.
I'm sure the looks had something to do with it too, as there were some guys around town that had Dodges, Fords, even a couple guys that had International pickups too.
My first memories of a our driveway getting plowed was a red 74 K 30 single rear wheel with a wrecker boom in the back. There was also a small dairy farm up the road about a mile, and the old buck had a couple over the years C 30 cab and chassis with a flat bed dump as his trucks.
I learned to plow in a 76 Dodge D250, 360, standard shift, with a Western plow! Then the next year the man I always rode around with on his plow route, got a 78 K 20, SB 400, with a TH400, and an 8' fisher plow. I thought that truck was the cats behind!
When I was a kid my brother had a 70 C 20 I thought was cool, but then he jumped the fence and started buying Ford pickups. A few years later my sister, and brother inlaw bought a brand new 1978 C 10 long bed, 250 six with a 3 on the tree. I loved everything about that truck, the smell even after it wasn't new anymore, the sound of the doors shutting, the sound of the engine, and transmission working together. It was a medium to light metalic green. I'm not a big green fan but that one looked good. That was my first 73-87, they gave it to me when it would pass inspection any more. It was rusted out bad. But I drove the wheels off it around my parent's property.

I had a couple of coworkers that had them and I thought they were cool.  Both were lifted and one guy had one with a ZZ4 crate motor and he used to do 4 wheel burn outs.

I grew up with a '76 GMC that was traded in on an '87 GMC along with an '86 GMC Suburban; so I spent a lot of time in the 73-87 GM trucks as a youth. As a result, I have a lifelong (literally) familiarity with this pickup truck model.

I've owned many old trucks prior to the current pair, including a 1964 F-100 (still have it), a 1958 Dodge 100, a 1982 F-150, a 1969 F-250 (390, Ranger, Camper Special) and a 1977 Chevy C-20 Silverado.  My primary driver after high school was a 1988 F-150, I found the '73 GMC K2500 at a swap meet and really liked it so I bought it (pretty cheap). I wound up doing a rolling rebuild on it.  After I had the '73 pretty much solid, I sold the F-150 (for what I originally paid for it) and kept driving the GMC.

I like all makes of old trucks, but the 73-87 GM pickups are very interchangeable and generally easy to work on and a bit nostalgic for me.

Nostalgia, mostly, and the relative ease of maintenance and parts availability. The truck I grew up with was
a '74 K10. It wasn't just a means of transportation, it was a place to hang out, a place to sleep if I'd had a few too many (drank a lot until I turned 21... wasn't so fun when it's legal).
No matter what went wrong, I was always able to get it home with minimal tools and experience.

When I was a kid my uncle had one, he was more like a dad (mom and dad split when I was 3, so only saw dad every other weekend and hated it cause his new wife was crazy and beat my brother more than dad did but anyway) we would do everything in it loved it in the winter cause we would go sledding behind it having loads of fun. Remember me my brother and my uncle two sons would ride in this truck so there was 5 of us and our jobs as kids where to look for cops, we where trained very good but if someone saw one we would say 5-0, then every other kid would duck down so it only looks like 3 people where in the truck. As soon as we sat in and buckled up we would have it planed out who would duck down and who would stay up. Ahhhhh the good ol days. Even after the truck my uncle got his great aunts 73 impala 2 door. my mom had a chevy truck and grandfather so it was kind of burnt in my head chevys where the only “trucks” then a couple of my other uncles who where in the nave and air force had lifted broncos that back then I thought where 20ft high now only one of them still has his bronco and its maybe 4” with 33-35 tires I just laugh at it now lol

My first vehicle was a 1980 C10 with a 400/400 that I explored every inch of and became obsessed with. I've never not owned a 73-87 since I was 16. I don't daily drive any of mine anymore because I have a long drive to work so for that I drive my Jeep otherwise I love these trucks. Someone asking you why not a 67-72? I would ask them why not a 73-87? I like everything about 73-87 better than the 67-72 and I can't think of one reason I would switch.

I too have never been with out a 73-87 since I was 14.
I had two buddies in high school that had 67-72 trucks. Plus one of those two guys I worked with at the local Ford dealer when I was first starting out in the automotive industry he had two that vintage then. We had alot of fun in them, they hold a place in my heart as well.
I have a soft spot for 64-66 trucks myself. I have had 7 of them over the years.

Started with a 71 C20 Longhorn, my first truck.  Had a 63, 64 and 65 over the years.  Had a 69 and 2 72's.  Just got stuck on the 73-87 after my 82 Scottsdale that I really liked.  Being up north there were way more of our body style trucks available that were affordable.  They grow on you as well.
