New from Oklahoma - need a VIN# for this truck!
« on: November 25, 2011, 12:56:50 pm »
Just bought a project truck in a state of repair (you guessed it, a 76 Stepside).  This state of repair has left me with no VIN# on the door jamb or in the dash.  I've read a couple of posts that talked about a number in the frame.  I've located a number on the driver side under the footwell, and on the passenger side in front of the gas tank.  Neither one of those numbers seems to correlate with a full VIN, nor do they have any similarity to the VIN on the title for the truck.

Any suggestions before a beg the DMV for mercy?

One more question - anyone know where to get the fuel tank filler hose for a this vehicle?  The parts sites only have Fleetside fuel tank hoses.

Thanks much

I was under the impression that what's on the frame is only part of the VIN, not the full number, but I could be wrong. Is the tag on the dash missing or does it look like there was never one there? If you have a title, why do you need to beg the DMV for mercy? Usually it's the other way around, no title and have VIN.

If you don't have any luck with the dmv maybe you could buy a truck with a title and a vin from someone and restore it using your truck for parts. Find one that is rusted out everywhere except the vin location and weld your truck to it for one big patch job.   ;D

x2 - if it is on the frame it will be there.

You are going to have to come up with an assigned VIN most likely even if you find the partial on the frame.
