Where can I find the VIN, when the body is missing???
« on: February 13, 2012, 05:03:08 pm »
I've recently obtained a free 80 4X4 Pickup...The body was burned and the VIN was mostly unreadable (I did get the last two letters and the sequence number).

Is the full VIN stamped any where on the frame???

Most of the time a partial is stamped to frame.  Is it so burnt that it melted or damaged beyond cleaning and being able to read ?
The people who you obtained it from, do they have any paperwork, old registration, repair orders with the vin# ?  I know you can go to local DMV and get a new one issued, it would be easier if you had documentation from P.O. and can prove it was in a fire.  They might even issue the original back if something shows it on paper.

All your going to get off the frame is the sequence number.

Hey vile, where are they usually.  On the 77 I had blasted and powder coated, all I found was a partial vin#.

I found my partial by where the steering pump mounts to the frame on the inside, I looked everywhere after it was blasted and before it was powdercoated, that is all I found.

On my 79 2wd frame I have 2. One on the right side near the radiator support mount and one on the right side at about the center of the rocker panel. Both are stamped on the outside of the frame rail.

This really sounds to me like it was up to the individual who was doing the stamping.  Weather they felt like doing the whole serial # or a partial serial #.

Look on the top of the frame rail near the steering box and under the cab before the gas tank on either side of the frame. I thought I posted pix of these locations somewhere. Don't have time to search right now but try using the search function.

I just found a picture that I posted a while back for someone asking the same thing. When I looked at it I noticed that the numbers were on the driver's side like Vile said. Funny thing is when I posted that they were on the passenger's side I had actually gone to look on the truck to see where they are. So tonight I looked again and I have numbers on both sides. I did not verify that they are all serial numbers but they are in the same locations on both sides. One is behind my gas tank so I couldn't see it but was able to feel it with my hand. These pictures are all of the same frame.

This is the driver's side. The frame is upside down on saw horses.

This is the passenger's side by the front body mount for the radiator support.

This is the passenger's side at about the center of the rocker panel.

Keep in mind some of those numbers are the part numbers for the actual frame rail..

That is what I thought. I remember looking one of them up and it verified the frame but not the vin.
