Time for a new transmission?
« on: January 05, 2013, 02:42:52 pm »
I'm having issues with my plow truck. 87 chevy v20. When shifting to reverse it will sometimes catch, some times not. It feels like its slipping like crazy until it gets enough rpm that it will start to move. Pulled it out to drop the plow so it could go on the lift and there's smoke pouring outta the trany dip stick tube. I'm thinking time for a new one? Anything to check before pulling it out? Thanks

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

Don't know if its ever been rebuilt. I've only had the truck since last spring and i only test drive it around the cul-de-sac then went to work repairing rust and rot. I plowed the 2 small storms that we've had and reverse is getting worse and worse. Guess its coming out. Just what I need. O well such is life.

Levels look fine, it's got an orangish brown color though, not reddish.

Sounds like you have more than ony problem. It only taking off hwen you get up to RPM sounds like the convert is going, or maybe your clutches.

I bet when you get it open all kinds of things are going to be burnt. :o  >:(

Got the tranny out of the truck tonight. Removed the transfer case and this is what i found. looks like the case is broken to me, but ive never taken one of these apart. that break on the right side isn't normal, right? I'm thinking I'm going to be looking for more then just a rebuild.
