Right Side Gas Tank Problem
« on: March 07, 2013, 10:03:20 am »
When I got this truck running a few months ago, the driver side tank was completely cancelled so any fuel was coming from the right side. It would stall at highway speeds. Rebuilt the carburetor, changed the fuel filter, and changed the sending unit. It worked fine for a while then started stalling at highway speeds about 40 miles after filling up. Blew out the lines and it seems to be ok but I feel this is only a temporary fix. My question is, could it be a bad tank? Maybe something foreign was put into the tank before I got it or excessive rust?
I did reconnect the the drivers side tank it everything works great from that side.
Truck is an '83 C10 longed with 20 gallon tanks. 305 with 3 speed automatic.

Check the vent line between the fuel tanks and the vapor canister.  Both tanks should be vented continuously through the vapor canister.  You might also check fuel pump suction with a vacuum gauge; should measure ~20" Hg.

Are you actually getting crap in the fuel lines? Are you sure you don't have any kinked lines?

Dualtone, I just reread your original post, plus your related post in another thread.  I agree with Vile, it does sound much more like restriction than a venting problem.  If you don't find a cause in the meantime and the problem recurs, cut the fuel filter apart and check it for rust, silt, etc.
