What 700r4's can I use
« on: May 25, 2014, 03:26:04 pm »
Hi, I have a 1986 C10 with a 454 and a th350. The truck originally had an overdrive transmission in it (a 700r4 I would have thought) but in the past this has been changed for the th350. I want to go back to having an overdrive but am unsure as to what type I can use. I am in England and parts availability is limited. Will a 700r4 from a similar year Camaro or Firebird work in the truck?

The Turbo-Hydramatic (TH) 700R4 automatic overdrive transmission was introduced to Chevrolet vehicles in 1981 for the 1982 model year vehicles.

It was introduced to the larger car (B-body and similar) and truck lines as the TH-2004R was introduced to the car line. The 200 was given a "universal" bellhousing bolt pattern for its ability to bolt to different engines (both the Chevy and B-O-P-C engines).

The 700 came in two bellhousing bolt patterns -- the standard "Chevy" which includes all smallblock engines from 262 to 400 cubic engines (and the later "Vortec" series engines and their derivatives), the big blocks from the truck only 366 to the 502, and the new ZZ572. This bellhousing pattern was also used for the 6.2 and 6.5 liter V-8 diesel engines, and it will also directly bolt up to the 3.3 liter 200 cubic inch, the 3.8 liter 229 inch V-6, and the 4.3 liter 262 cubic inch engines.

The 700R4 bellhousing bolt patterns should all be the same with the exception of the early 60° V6 applications

How about tail shafts. I've heard stuff about long tail shafts and short tail shafts. Are the 700r4's all the same length.

The difference in tailshafts are 2wd & 4x4. There are some differences in tailshaft housings, as where the mount position is on the F-body vs. Astro, 2WD truck, ect.
The 700 is the same overall as the mid-length TH350 (9 1/2" comes to mind) so if that is what was put in previously...you will be good to go. Hope this Helps, Lorne

you want a newer 700r4 (4l60) 87-93. its has all the updates that fix most the problems the stock 700 had, these problems are what gave the 700 a bad rep
