Transmission Swap Help
« on: June 16, 2014, 12:25:49 pm »
I got a 78 4x4 with a three speed from factory I just can't get right, so I am looking to just put in a th350 automatic. I was wondering if all of the 4x4 transmissions back then were the same and will interchange with each other. I have found a trans and transfer case still bolted together, but the transfer case is not a np205 like mine, but is an aluminum one. Could you guys give me some info on what I am I getting into as for other parts such as cross members, adapters etc;.....all thoughts appreciated

Does anyone know if the 73-80 model 4x4 trucks all had the same th350 transmission in them, regardless of the transfer case or are the rear output shafts all a different length

Different output shaft depending on what was behind them.

You tried adjusting the linkage ?

The ears on the column under the hood have a home in the center of them

Put the trans linkage in N
Loosen the adjusting nut on the trans
Put the levers on the trans in N
You can feel em pop into N

Put a drill bit thru the two holes.t
Then tighten The nuts

You also need to be careful on what year trans you get, because the crossmember will be different. The (not so bright) PO of my truck put an older 75 TH350 in my 86 that had a 700r4 and the crossmember was wrong and he had it all "hillbilly" attached. Took me awhile to figure out the year of the trans and what brace and mounts I need. So just know the year of the trans when you buy it.
