Air conditioning issues
« on: September 09, 2014, 04:27:11 pm »
I've got an '84 Silverado that I thought I had just got the AC system finished on. After running it for a handful of days, I've hit a problem. When the AC is turned on, the high pressure side of the evaporator core freezes, the compressor also turns off and on. I put a light on the wire between the low pressure switch and the compressor and it blinks on and off. All of which is a problem, but is also leaving me with a warm AC system. I've read a couple things here and there and think I'm just about to realize the issue, but keep realizing I'm stumped and need help.

What do you mean the high pressure side of the evaporator core? The Evaporator is on the low side of the system. What did you do to the system and what are your operating/cycling pressures?

I put the whole system on my truck, it's a mix of new and old that mostly came off an operational truck. The only reason it came off the other truck is because the truck is going prostreet. I put the whole system in and took it to get a vacuum run on it and charged. It held for 30 minutes then got charged up. I got the truck back and drove it about a week when this started. The line that is freezing is at the bottom of the evaporator. I don't have the ability to put gauges on it so I can't answer that question

Ok, so I realized that I'm able to put a gauge on the accumulator (low side?). So, I hooked it up and it's to get a definate read because of how the compressor is cycling on and off. The compressor kicks on for about 2 seconds and then maybe off for 5 and keeps that same cycle the whole time the system is on. But for the few seconds it's on it builds somewhere to 48-50 psi range then it kicks off and will continue to get to that same psi every time the compressor kicks on.

The second sentence is saying it's hard to get a definate reading

So you are saying it gets down to 48psi on the low side and then the compressor kicks off? How much refrigerant did you put in?
