14 bolt SF rear end posi
« on: January 06, 2015, 06:52:40 pm »
Hey guys, I have a question about my 14 bolt semi floating rear end that is suppose to be going into my 1977 k10 1/2 ton as a replacement. I am currently running a spooled 12 bolt axle with 3.08 airplane gears and absolutely hate it, so the plan is to swap it out for this 14 bolt SF out of a parts truck, which is an 84 K20. I have drove this truck for a few months and the posi works good along with the 3.73 gear ratio. Besides the leaking seals which I had planned to replace anyway when I tear it down. Upon the initial punkin cover removal I instantly saw this little guide? piece with a tension spring attached around it was mashed in. I have never worked on a posi rear and so I dont know the function of this shaft or retaining cylinder which looks pressed into the carrier? I don't want to run it like this as I dont know what damage it may cause in the long run, but I know it didn't do anything strange when it was in my other truck and I would have never thought anything was wrong. It dosen't make sense to me as this piece dosen't seem to move when manually rotating the axle, or as to how it got damaged. Maybe somebody can shed some light on this? Thanks

It's a grenade I mean GOV LOC differential basically a locking differential. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftyJvIO0DZ8

Not an exact match but you get the idea. I prefer a true posi over a locker but it really id preference. Hard to tell from your pic. Can you post better pics?

Cool, thanks for the video, that's about as good as it gets for an explanation  ;D. That's why I couldn't find a video of a "posi" locker, its called a GOV LOCK or eaton locker. Anyway like I said I never really tore many 3/4 ton or 1 ton axles apart before so I'm still learning. I wonder if it would be possible to remove the gov lock to run as an open diff without all the govcrap inside? Anyone have any input on that?

I'll take a couple more pics of the setup tomorrow. A little chunk of metal must have broke off of the pressed piece and got caught in the ring gear, as a little piece is missing from one tooth, but nothing that is going to cause it to grenade. I may just run it and see how it holds up. The spool in the 12 bolt makes it a bear on the road and down right dangerous in the snow.
