how in the heck do I tension my power steering???
« on: May 28, 2015, 09:55:13 pm »
1983 k10, 350 goodwrench crate motor. Removed all of my ac components, and apparently the compressor was tensioning my power steering. So now I have no power steering. I understand that these trucks use a dual slot tensioner but the one next to the manifold I can't get to. The nuts is basically touching the manifold..... I don't have big enough arms to turn manually....

put a box end wrench on the bolt then use another wrench similar in size and use that second one's box end and link the two wrenches together and use it as leverage like this picture

it can sometimes be tricky to set it up, but it works

A Thexton #383 P/S pump tool helps provide the needed leverage to adequately tighten the belt too, without damaging the reservoir.

You can also search for "AC Idler Pulley" or "AC Compressor Removal Pulley".....there are many depending on the block and application.  They look something like this (below) and just act as a place holder/idler in place of the removed compressor.

Any possibility of posting a pic or two, so we can get a better idea of exactly what you're facing?

Since there has been no reply, consider whether a long 9/16" combination wrench will work, such as a Snap-On OEXL 18B (pictured below).
