1984 Silverado 700r4 Shifting To Soon
« on: May 25, 2015, 03:57:15 am »
Hi their everyone, So i think my trans is shifting to soon its a 1984 Silverado with a 700r4 it has about 114,000 on it, when at 1/4 throttle or so its goes 10mph-1st,15-17mph-2nd,22-26mph-3rd at around 1200-1500 rpm.
The problem to me is it would have much more ready power in the 2000-2500rpms range for the shift points when just cruising around. I do have good fluid and fluid level, my TV cable is pretty tight when pulled the throttle is pulled fully open about as tight as a guitar string, Ive never messed with it so i assume its close at least.
The thing is i cant tell if its always shifted like this because its been many years since i last drove the truck and back then i didn't pay attention or drive it much. I would like to know what other 700r4s act like compared to mine and if mine is not shifting correctly what i can do to fix it. I have heard you can mess with Governor weights and such but Ive never tried. Thanks

The shift point for each gear will depend on the load. If you're light on the pedal, then the trans will shift through the gears quicker.....which may be what you're experiencing. Try laying into it on a freeway ramp, for example, (WOT).....it will likely hold onto each gear longer.

The 350s and 400s are the same. I'm often amazed at the range each gear has.....which is what makes them such great transmissions.

Unless you're tuning for the strip, rock crawling, or some other specific purpose.....it's unlikely that you need to open the transmission for adjustments.  Just make sure you're running a high quality ATF.

both my trucks are the same way with TH350s. really light on the gas like i prefer to drive then they just shift too early. ive learned to give them enough gas at the right time to "drag out the gears" a little bit longer. you will get the hang of it

im not sure if u can get one of those adjustable vacuum module/regulators for a 700r4 or not?

This is normal, I like it. Keeps rpm down when I'm goin slow (which is rarely ;D) and you can control the shifts really easily.

The 700 has no vacuum devices, all done thru the TV cable and it's adjustment.

Our 1997 Blazer has a 4L60. It is the TH700R4 evolved.

Shift points are pretty similar as yours. Our Blazer shifts into OD around 45mph and final torque converter lock is around 52mph.

I like it that way. I'm old school and don't rev my engines. It took me a long time to convince myself that the LS engine in my wife's truck really didn't mind 4,500rpm, and 6,000 is nothing. But then again I've spun my 454 7,000rpm more times than I can count. My 454 isn't stock either. Hehe.

Guy I work with has a 2015 Silverado crew cab 4x4 that I put about 20 miles on last week. It's 6sp transmission is nothing like the older 4speeds.

Yes the 700R4 and the 4L60 are the same, but only up until 1994 or 95. After that, they are a 4L60-E. This is because the shifting is done electrically and there is no TV cable, only a throttle cable. Same transmission as my 97 Silverado 1500.

LS engines are completely different yet exactly the same. The basic idea of the LS is designed off the old small blocks but so many improvements have been made and all kinds of modifications make it it's own seperate animal. I drive all kinda of GM cars and trucks all day long for work at the dealer, and I will say that it's probably fair to say I see close to 100 LS engine vehicles a week. They are extremely reliable and some of the best product GM has every put out, right there next to the traditional small blocks. I've pushed LS engines well up to 6,000 rpm many times.

You are correct in that the new 2014 and 2015 Silverados, Tahoes and Suburbans are nothing like the old 4 speeds. GM has been offering the 6-speed as on option since 2007, but 2014 and newer now I believe, it is standard equipment. Wait till GM starts production of their new 10 speed auto's. Those will really knock your socks off!

Start by readjusting the TV cable. Is it 2 or 4wd? Do you know what gear ratio you have?
